I just acquired this vice, and nobody has any idea what it was designed for. I wondered if it was for repairing sickles on an old field mower.
Does anyone have the truth of what this was designed for?

I think it's one of those pliers, screwdriver, iron, pickup truck, swimming pool sort of gadgets. Does a lot of stuff, none of it well.
Wow!!! That is very interesting! I think that is exactly what I have, although I am short a couple of pieces. I don't have the center piece, that appears to be flat backstop for the drill, and I don't have the actual crank handle for the drill.
Thank you for responding to my post. I couldn't find any information.

Is the underneath hollow? My buddy had a similar one that was hollow.

It was designed and patented by Rock Island and produced from about 1915 to 1930. The drill press feature was a bit useless in practical application, but the vise itself was ok. The best feature was the fact that you could extend it pretty far out by installing the pin in one of the holes in the slide and tightening from there. I used to have one. I think it brought about $130 at auction when I sold it.

Turn of the century do-it-all vise. Very commonly found on farms where you needed to repair a lot of different things.

I have been up close to one of these things and as the story goes, it does a lot of things but none of them well. Still a fun thing to have around your shop.

If I remember right, it was patented in 1914.

If I remember, Carl Sheilds was president of Rock Island.
Wow! You're very informed on this vice! It is a conversation piece, sitting on my workbench. I'd like to find the rest of the missing pieces some day, but until then, it's pretty cool.
