Smoke detectors in Md and Va are required by code to be hardwired for power. That way they always have power because there are no batteries to go dead.

Is heat detector still needed nowadays? Can I replace it with smoke & carbon detector? This is in my garage with a water heater in the Attic of the garage..

I went with the heat detector, because a smoke & carbon detector would be going off in my garage whenever I work in it or started my car...

If it's still connected to some sort of alarm, leave it in place. As mentioned, smoke detectors can have false alarms from car exhaust (or potentially from the dust and dirt that gets generated in a garage when working on projects.)

Even hard wired detectors have batteries they are more of back up batteries. Incase the house looses power.

certainly not a requirement where I live (local FD will come install battery ones and replace them annually if requested by disabled/elderly folks)

Requirement is that you have them, preference is for hard wired, though mine are all battery operated (Nest protects).
