There are plenty of hardwired smoke/CO detectors. I have them in my own home.

oh I see I have the adt box next to it it seems connected. But currently I don't have this service in my adt plan. Is this thing still necessary nowadays?I think so too, I have one similar to it in my garage wired up to the alarm system...

It's locked I don't think I have the keys, but I feel it's weird the owner shouldn't have the keys.. Why.. Smh..I would check with adt to see if it's connected. it may be monitored and if you mess with it & set it off.... well at least you'll know then
is the panel accesible or do they have it locked? you could open it up & see if it's wired in maybe

Smoke detectors in Md and Va are required by code to be hardwired for power. That way they always have power because there are no batteries to go dead.
Is heat detector still needed nowadays? Can I replace it with smoke & carbon detector? This is in my garage with a water heater in the Attic of the garage..

Even hard wired detectors have batteries they are more of back up batteries. Incase the house looses power.
