What to do with busted DeWalt drills?

At the shop we have 3 older cordless DeWalt drills. Two 18 volt XRP, and a 14.4 volt. The 14.4 just doesn't work anymore and the battery is no good. As for the 18 volts, both work however, the clutch slips on both. Also, one has a broken chuck. There are also to 18 volt batteries no longer any good.

I know it would cost too much to rebuild them. Anyone know of anything to do with them? Keep them for parts? Is any place taking broken power tools in part trade for new? Does any place buy them for recycling? Anything useful they could be used for? Would it be worth getting at least the 18 volt batteries rebuilt? We use a lot of 18 volt DeWalt tools.

I searched for an old thread on this topic. Found one. But there wasn't much there. Maybe I'll end up with the same result. But I thought it'd be worth a shot.

I trade mine in at Murdocks when they have their dewalt credit sale, usually $50 towards a new power tool

The 14 volt stuff can be converted to 12v corded easily. I have a long 12v extension cord and Anderson connectors on my truck so I can plug it into my f350. Two deep cycle batteries will run a drill for a long........ time.

Other then that steal the parts for other products. dealt used to use good quality chucks. One of my old cordless drill chucks now resides on my air drill.

Diy battery rebuilding isn't hard. YouTube is your friend.

I have sold them on eBay. I state what is wrong with them and start the auction at a penny. People still buy them.

IMO, your 2 best options; first, do what fourjeepin says. It is crazy, but people will bid on anything. Just make sure you state any and all problems so no one can comeback with a claim you didn't disclose everything. (my brother sells all kinds of useless, broken, non-functional things on ebay, he says people will buy anything!)

Option 2 would be to use them on a trade in for Dewalt or any of the other major brands. They usually give $50 to $100 towards a new set.

Any ideas on who may take them on trade?

I took a quick look with some Google searches. In Canada both Milwaukee & Makita have trade ins with selected/authorized dealers.

In the US most promos are around free battery or free tools. Dewalt has this tour going on
http://www.dewalt.com/events.aspx

If they are coming to your area soon, they specify they offer trade ups. Haven't been to one of these but they look like they could be like the car tent sales where you can get some good deals.

Otherwise, when the current promos end, the will have new promos and between now and Christmas, one of them should hva national promos for trade ins

The broken 14.4V probably has jammed brushes.

Take the case apart (a handful of Torx screws) and check that the brushes slide freely in the brush holders. Usually pushing them out and cleaning the holder fixes the problem.

But if the battery is dead, don't bother. A new DeWalt battery is still $79, despite being functionally obsolete. Rebuilding the battery with new cells is feasible, but won't cost much less.

Ive seen someone on here who takes out the batteries from the battery housing then screws the housing to a shelf (or wherever you keep power tools). It then makes the perfect hanger for the tool...

My latest Northern Tool flyer offered $100 off a 20v dewalt hammer drill impact driver kit with any cordless trade in. It had the larger batteries and cost $229 I think.

I sold the 2 18V drills and the old non working batteries over the weekend. But I still have the 14.4 drill and battery. Should I just try and hold out for a trade in program? Would it even be worth it with such an old one?

Any true retailer of quality tools.....Havent heard of the box stores doing the trade in deals...but my FIL traded in a POS old drill for 100.00 credit on his new FUEL drills at a local ACE, I did the same twice at my Fastenal...

No way would I give em or sell em cheap...they worth 50.00 at minimum...I've gotten 100.00 each for 2 dead Makitas...
