What tools do I need for a diesel?

Howdy all, I am switching from gas engines in my Scout II's to 4bt & 6bt. My 88' F-350 has a 7.3 IDI diesel. So now I need to get tools together for road kits and for home. What all do I need to do all the work myself?
Thanks, JASTECH

Just normal metric hand tools and a filter wrench for the basic maintenance. Assuming your talking about a BT and not some thing else. You will also need a feeler gauge to set the valves about every 15k or so. The rest of the motor, if in good shape should go 250k+ or way more w/o any thing else. Might go through an alternator, belt tensioner, or a vacuum pump seal ( if your running the dodge 6bta version) in that time too.

Snap-on makes a tune up set for 12v BTA and 24v ISB motors but unless your setting the timing, or checking the compression you really don't need one. BTW if you are running a 12V motor I have a few extra Snap-on Compression adapters I'm looking to sell, I some how wound up with 3 of them!

I guess you could buy all that stuff but you don't need it. The engine barring tool is kinda nice, but I find that by the time I go and get it, pull the plug and install it, and setup some thing to drive it I might as well just get a socket and and breaker bar and turn the motor over with the alternator pulley nut ( plus it's on the front of the motor not the back). You can make an injector puller for almost no cost from a small section of pipe, tubing, or conduit and a nut off the truck.

No where
Are they inline injection pumps on the engines or what? I'd get the timing set and engine barring tool.

Blue point baring tool has bearing in it, worth the money.

If you got a P-pump get the deliver valve socket and timing set.

If you have the VE-pump get the 13mm pump wrench and 10mm wrench for idle screw.

I will buy all that is needed a kit at a time, lol. I thank all for your advise as I need it on diesel engines. I was told to replace the 7.3 IDI in the 88' F350 with a 6bt for better milage and more power, is this true and worth the swap hassel? I have the ZF-5 ******.

Not saying everything is needed if any, just options.

Alternator nut never seems to work for me, especially with higher valvespring pressures.
