Curious if anyone can help me determine a CL value for the two boxes below. Wife yelled at me when I brought them home.

Top looks to be a Kennedy made? Snap-On that has been painted some, but not bad rust. Bottom is a Mac MB 75 in fairly good shape for the age.

Any help is appreciated!

Bought them at an estate sale - wife had a fit (spent way too much today) and says I have too many boxes. I think I got them for a song, but curious if folks with more knowledge on these older boxes could give me an idea of what they might actually be "worth," as I have no idea how much to put them on CL for.

The mac box would be 800+ here in Saskatchewan canada. The snap on would be a tough sell. Price would depend on the buyer. A well off guy would put up good coin for it around here. Finding him would be another story. Just my opinion.

Find a kid starting up, maybe a hot rod or something, and give it to him.

For CL I price high and haggle.

Yep.. Regardless you will more than likely looking for a buyer wanting period correct stuff to fit there collection. When I buy stuff to resell, I put a number that would probably be the lowest I could get on a average day. The Mac box appears to have a fairly small footprint, I'd go with $200. The older logo stamped SO tool boxes are a tough market, $75 IMO. I would double those prices and negotiate only with interested parties standing in front of me.

that snap on box is cool as frig...

that said, that people collect/sell/deal in older quality tools like antiques -- to be put somewhere and admired -- is really strange to me. like seeing stradivarius behind glass at the smithsonian.

I was discussing this topic in another thread here on GJ yesterday. One of the other members here was saying how he researches the average price of his item on ebay, then prices his item at 2/3 that price for Craigslist. He was proud that he almost always gets his asking price. lol. Sure, when you're selling something for 2/3 it's value of course it's going to sell. lol.

I'm with you... Price high and let the CL low-ballers beat you down to reality. Nothing wrong with trying to get as much as you can for your item.

Thanks guys, for the advice! I really had no idea where to go on the prices on these. Now to decide if I swap the better-built Mac for an old Waterloo built Proto bottom chest and sell that one... ;)

I'd say the Snap-on is worth about $30 judging by the price tag on it ;)

Seriously, they're both cool. I wish I were closer...

2/3 of ebay selling price would be dandy for me, no packing, no shipping, no two weeks later charge backs or shipping scams, and no ebay fees or reporting.

I think the top box has greater value a guy with a rat rod that would be just the ticcket to fit in. The mac bottem I would 300 for in these parts.

Exactly. Ask a fair price, screen for genuine interest (fair, firm price, bring cash, cater to your schedule), and be done with it.

Ok I'm impressed, that was low-res pic!

$30 for the Snap-On and paid $85 for the Mac. Decided today to keep (i.e. not swap out for) my old Proto-branded Waterloo since it is bigger, even though the Mac is better built.

Funny thing is I bought the Snap-On about 30 mins after the sale started and everyone had walked by it. Went back to look in it and as soon as I dropped the front panel and saw the logo in reverse I picked it up.

I through the Mac up for $240 and the Snap-On for $180. I generally hate CL, but need to get rid of them.

Sure. But why cut yourself short? Wouldn't 3/3 (full value) be better? Just because you're selling something on CL doesnt mean your item is worth less. Don't get me wrong, you can sell your $100 item for one cent for all I care. In fact, your way of thinking is great for me when I'm the buyer.... But as a seller, I prefer to get the most for my item. Doesnt matter if it's ebay, CL, garage sale, ect.

Depends on the market and how long you are willing to hold onto it. I sold a ton of ton on craigslist out west. My current location not so much. A smaller population and less demand. So do I price things high and sit on it for 6 months? Or price below market and shift it in a few days and still make a healthy profit? Yeah sitting and waiting might make you a few extra bucks but you also might end up holding it forever. I like stuff to move fast and get the cash while I can. Time is money to me. But again depends on the market and intent. To each their own. :dunno:

I hate CL for that reason - at least on fleabay it is getting shipped out in 7 days.

Let the Mac go tonight for $200 to a nice guy using it in an HVAC biz. Happy to have it gone in a day, and show the wife some money ;)

Hopefully you only showed her the original investment of $85. :see:

You did VERY well selling that lil (30"?) Mac box, I see them regularly for $50-100 in good condition. Those SO's arent as common but usually in similar condition I see them with $50-75 asking prices. Buying to flip I wouldnt want to be into both for more than $100, hope to get $200 but likely only get $150 total out of them.

JMHO but ebay and craigs prices both are usually a multiple of reality, they tend to cater more to less informed buyers with overinflated senses of value and a buy-it-now mentality than those who truly know what theyre buying and its value. As a consequence their prices tend to vary greatly with collecting fads and Joe Public's cashflow. 20 years ago early woodwacking tools were hot online, 10 years ago vintage SO, now both have faded and it seems to be vises and anvils that're going nutty. Usually Dec-early March there are some deals to be found bc Joe's out of cash, late March-June folks are busy blowing their tax returns and prices go crazy. I attend quite a few collector's events ranging from well-known public shows like Arnfest to several invite-only sales/swaps and rarely see the prices I do on craigs or ebay, the prices are more steady bc serious collectors arent subject to inflation, know the market, have the best examples or know their location already, and often have more disposable income than Joe Public.

Personally, when I sell to the public I dont hold out for full "normal" ebay or craigs price bc I dont want to sit on an item and I also dont want the hassle of dealing with the uninformed/unwashed 1%. I price things at what I consider a fair asking price bc I want them gone quickly and in the process I've met quite a few serious collectors and other nice folks who I wouldnt have had I priced things high. Both here in NY and in Indiana I have had regular, repeat customers who I consider friends and who've helped me with buying/collecting and not just selling. I could care less about getting every penny out of an item once bc I've seen other benefits of being reasonable.
