Picked all this up for $40 a few years ago at a auction, fair price or what? I don't really know what 90% does...
See below for pics.

You definitely got your $40 worth! If those taps and dies are in good shape, I'd say it deserves a YOU ****! The drill bits alone are worth the 40 bucks.

It's absolutely worthless. To ensure proper disposal, you must forward all of it to me. I'll even waive disposal fees if you'll cover shipping costs. ;)

I like the storage drawers.

The stuff is the typical selection of machinist's tooling and small tools. My guess is the dies and taps are carbon steel, not HSS.

If I saw it at a garage sale, I'd pay up to $60, but only for the drawers.

If you have ever went to buy large drill bits those suckers can set your wallet back a few dollars and I am talking the Chinese ones like the Dewalt from lowes. Mind you just buying American ones will be very expensive new. Used I pick them up for a dollar or two for the large ones. Tools like the tap & dies if dull are not worth much and used files are also not worth much, but if you need them new plan to shell out some money.

Tip for you to consider:

If you have a menards in your area keep your eyes out for a new Huot drill index (still made in the USA) or better yet keep your eyes open for them on your local CL and pick them up. Then start filling up the boxes and in time you can either sell them as sets or use them in your shop; the one nice thing is you can sharpen them unlike a dull file (it can be brought back to life but time consuming) and dull taps & dies can sometimes be put to use.

What's my junk worth?

Not much.

Some guys go nuts over used, random boxes of some other guys worn out chit, but it looks like a lot of junk to me.

My philosophy, buy new, buy what you need, you'll come out ahead... like you said you don't even know what 90% of it is!

a machinist wouldn't store his files and taps like that.
i would all are dull from age, use, and storage.
drill bits are consumables. throw them out when dull, or, sharpen if you have the spare time and patience..
dull taps are throwaways, so are dull files, unless you want to spend $$ to get the files re sharpened.
nostalgic value, hell yes.
$ value? minimal..

There's lots of drills over .5 inch which I know aren't cheap. Only thing worth while to me is the files, taps, dies and drills. I don't have the right equipment or knowledge to use the other tools

the problem is that the taps, dies, and drill bits are not made of modern materials that we all have become spoiled with. - the only thing of value there is the files and the cabinet. $40 sounds about right.

I didn't say the stuff belonged to a machinist, rather the lot is mostly associated with the machinists' trade.

Otherwise I agree with everything you say.

Unless the OP has a need or use for any particular piece, the value then becomes re-sale value, which is quite low. A tap wrench or two, hammer, maybe some of the larger drill bits might be of interest. Otherwise it might as well be a collection of sash weights.

But I do like the drawers.

what's it worth? unless you need/want to use them probably not much.
i aint trying to put your junk down.
like others have said theyre old and most likely worn out.

heres what i'd do.
steal a few clean clear tupperware style bins from your wife/girlfriend/kitchen and put all the tools in them nice and clean and organized.
put them on CL for maybe 50 or 55 bucks OBO. let a buyer talk you down to 40 clams so they feel like they got a deal.
than you end up getting the cool drawers for free:thumbup:

just a thought.

This is what I would keep and sell off the rest...

Cabinets
Any and all wood handles
Good or great files
And drills that have not been sharpened so much they lost the cut
Taps and Dies, handles
any and all brass.bronze punches
countersinks if they are in there
Jacobs chuck
Dial indicator gauge?
Pin spanner wrench
Reamers..I see some are adjustable.

Hard to see what else is in there.

Take anything you don't want and sell it off for 20-30 bucks. Unless there is $$$ items to ebay or whatever.

Then it is worthless!

I do not see any gems that you can resell and make some money back.

It reminds me a junk box for a backyard mechanic. He had the drills cut down to fit in 1/4" drill.

There is definitely $40 there if you can use it, but first you have to find out what it does~

man you guys are harsh! I see lots of good stuff there. any scrap carbide is like $12/lb if there is any, keep the reamers, they are expensive if you ever need one.

BTW, I like the can of Surge in first photo. I assume it is the repro, not vintage. I worked for Coke when we originally launched that ****...couldn't give it away, I literally took a pallet home and ended up dumping most of it...

Is that a bent file sitting on the counter? I need to do that to some of mine.
I guess? I thought it was made like that. It's probably twice my age.

That's funny, because every machinist I have ever known stores their tools like that, LOL
