What's your propane cost?

So been noticing propane prices skyrocketing this year. Two years ago I paid $1.19 per gallon delivered. Earlier this year in July, I paid $1.69 per gallon delivered. Prices are currently $2.49 per gallon. Been rising close to $ .10 per gallon per week over the past month. For those who have to purchase propane this winter, it's going to be painful.

Sounds like natural gas is going to be up in price this winter too.

Still worth it to have dry, clean heat.

$1.90.

Prebought 900 gallons in September. That will probably take us through March, into late April.

Gets cold up here. Used maybe eighty gallons so far this season.

$2.30 is crazy expensive here, and it is rising faster than a creek in a monsoon....and I think we all know why.
Hope you all locked in your rates this past summer!!!
I have NG but I am sure I am gonna get raped too, in the next 3 years.
Hold on to your hats, it is only going to get worse!

Current price in Md. is $ 3.043 per EIA price data. I capped mine last month at $ 2.99.
I'm going back to using my woodstove this winter. Already cut and split 3 cords. ( been down 3 yrs )

I just checked my natural gas cost. A year ago it was 45 cents a therm, lat month it was $2.10 a therm. Even with a 5 times jump it is still the least expensive way to heat!

They NYMEX closed for November delivery at over 60 cents per therm, and interstate and local delivery costs get added to that. 55 cents would not be a current price. If someone is paying that it indicates their supplier hedged gas out through a purchase contract that has them well under current market prices.

The $2.10 per therm number smells like someone is passing through gas costs from the Texas/Oklahoma gas-well freeze off last February where gas sellers were able to reprice gas into the system due to Force Majeure, and some gas companies saw periods where they were forced to pay on the order of $50 per therm ($500 per DTH) for some of their gas on some days during the crisis. These gas costs are now showing up on home heating bills about the same time that current prices are at 13 year highs.

High natural gas prices will affect power prices as well, as over 40% of US power production is natural gas fueled. Then there's the fact (per the EIA) that more than 60% of the energy used for electricity generation is lost in conversion....so...this is all getting pricey.

Some of the price jump is pandemic related. In 2020 prices started artificially low due to pandemic related demand destruction (closed businesses for instance not needing gas)...some of those low prices slowed down investments in drilling which has caused current demand to slightly outpace current supply. I think some of it is political too. Some versions of he current infrastructure bills include methane taxes that may be spooking the market.

As far as being able to get it though NG is one of the few things I can count on being able to get delivered on time every day. I recently tried to order some service risers and was quoted 14 month delivery. Gas meters are 6 months out. Gas regulators they won't even say how far out they are because the factory isn't even making them these days due to manpower shortages.

I would like to know why you are 55 cents and we are at $2.10?!

Not sure:
Contracts for the gas signed at different times ?
Size of the utility, possibly volume contract ?

I do know that our utility does not mark up the gas. They made a big deal about this when the price increases started this summer.
This pricing difference came last year when GJ members in Maine they were paying 4-6 times the going rate of other states.

For me in my area, natural gas, if it was available to me, would be more expensive than propane for me. Now lots of people tell me that’s impossible but that’s because many people don’t take into consideration all the costs for natural gas vs propane. In my area, the BTU cost of propane vs natural gas clearly favors natural gas. However, in my area the natural gas companies charge $35 per month just for the meter. That’s $420 per year. Then, the same BTUs of natural gas as I currently use in propane would cost me another $200-250 for a total natural gas cost of about $620-670 per year. My propane costs me $60 in tank rental per year. This year my propane cost was $400 so total propane cost was $460 vs the $620-670 for natural gas. If natural gas prices jump then there’s an even larger disparity since my propane price stays fixed.

All that said, I don’t use a lot of propane due to highly insulated house and well insulated shop, a dual fuel propane furnace/heat pump for the house, and both a heat pump water heater and a propane water heater. We use propane for the stove and oven but that’s not much. We also have a wood stove in the house for those days when the outside temps really fall. Our total utility costs with electricity and propane combined are very low thanks to good insulation.

If I used more propane, eventually the higher cost per BTU for propane vs natural gas would eventually even out and natural gas would eventually become cheaper. However, natural gas, once all the factors are figured in, is not always the cheapest. Most people only compare BTU costs of natural gas vs propane without considering ALL the additional costs of each fuel.

I love propane even when it jumps in price. The way to keep propane from being too expensive is to have enough storage capacity so you don’t have to fill in the winter. I fill once per year and only in the summer when it’s cheapest.

Natural gas has long been considered the most reliable utility but last winter really showed how marginal the system’s reserve capacity really was. Largest city in my area was pleading with people to lower their thermostat setting and reduce their natural gas consumption during last winter’s huge drop in temps (Feb I think?) They didn’t have enough pressure being fed to the city to meet the increased demand. I would think long and hard about whether I would ever have a natural gas generator once I saw how marginal the natural gas supply was.

Since we were on propane and wood heat for the “polar vortex” last year, I didn’t spend a minute worrying about it. House stayed at normal temps and we lived life just like normal.

When i built my house, i bought a 1000 gallon tank. I fill every year around end of July/August to 800 gallons capacity, then pre-buy about another 500 gallons. This year, top off at 1.29 and prebuy at 1.39. I should be good thru middle of next year, depending on the weather.

I can’t believe that so many replies are paying so little for a gallon of propane?! In the northeast northern most part of Nj I’ve paid last year in August $2.79. Now that fuel costs are going up faster than a good nor’easter the current price for propane is $3.30 !!!!!!
And I’ve got a 1000 gal tank for a 1800 sqft house and 1 car shop/garage. Can’t shop around bcuse my tank is rented $25/qtr and in Nj no other propane supplier will never deliver nor quote their price to non customers. I’m 66 years old not sure I’d be able to cut split wood but I have no possible place for a wood stove. Extra blankets this winter. Good luck to all be safe.

Sorry it's that way for you. Unfortunately, you live in a VERY high cost of living place. The high costs of living in NJ isn't just propane. Pretty much everything in that state is very expensive. Move to a lower cost of living state would solve that issue. Not sure if that's an option or not.

Rather insensitive and tone deaf reply, in my opinion.

I am in Joplin Mo as I write this, a cultural wasteland that you couldn’t pay me to live in, but it’s cheap.

Delivered propane is around $1.50 per Liter around here last I checked. There's a 10 cent spread on whether it's going into a <500L tank or 500+.

It's a complete gouge because there's no NG available and home insurance has basically railroaded oil out of the picture. Other choices are electric at 14c/kwh or heat with wood.

Like the UP is a cultural mecca!! :ROFLMAO:

It is beautiful country, but I didn't see too many show halls or huge cultural museums last time I went through.

Joplin can leach of the Ozarks for its beauty.

Bought winter contract at $1.79. 1,500 gallons. Had to sign a waiver though that left supplier an out if his wholesale price rose more than X %. The waiver was the result of a catastrophic price increase a few years ago. A regional propane facility was taken off line mid winter for maintenance. Propane rose to $6-7 a gallon. Many suppliers refused to honor contract pricing, a lot went under. Our local Amerigas was one.

just read the feds are mulling the shutdown of Enbridge’s line 5 that run under the straits of Mackinac. The line has been under siege by the state for some time. It they succeed it’s gonna drive up the price of gas as well. Could be a cold winter here! Property values will plummet!

Price seems to have stabilized in my area at the moment at $2.49 per gallon. But, it also hasn't gotten cold yet either. Be interesting to see where it gets to in a month or two.

Im locked in till July for 2.29 here in Ohio. I don't own my tank but around here most companies don't really care. They will fill it just for the business.

most companies have you sign a contract locking you in. is this the case? They have it in contracts you sign that they can break the agreement if prices change drastically.

if you are locked in by word of mouth " hand shake" then all bets are off anyway.

we are going to see propane jump in price very soon.... in the middle of winter when the say there is a "shortage" of propane.

when in reality there is not a shortage, its drivers sitting waiting to be filled for days and you get charged for that

Consequences of 187 drill rigs going bankrupt due to low oil prices in 2019 and 2020?

How about keeping the politics out of this thread? It’s about propane prices (and natural gas prices) not your personal politics.

Jumped again in my area. It’s been unusually warm this year so my consumption is way lower than last year but I’m sure that’ll change soon. $2.59 per gallon currently.
