Yep, I meant the worktop. But the white board is a great idea for sketching up ideas and keeping dimensions for projects.

The countertop kind of resembles the plastic type countertop found in kitchens. It's particle board covered by a thick plastic laminate. Its extremely heavy and quite strong.

That gray mat is the best thing I ever bought. It keeps all the lock pins from flying across the room and has a spot to put each pin as you take them out of the lock.

I like that bench mat. Where did you get it? Do you know the manufacturer's name?

Thanks, Jimbob. I thought I had my workbench all layed out of how I was going to re-use what I have and try to reconfigur e it a little. Thanks to all the great ideas here and staring at how clean and cool yours looks, now I have to reconsider a complete re-do. Thanks for extending my project and increasing my budget. Just wait until my minister of finance hears this...

Got my table saw base finished. Same height as the workbench so I can cut plywood without help. My wife is loving the exposure playing Vana White in these photos.

I have a bench virtually right around the 40 x 40 part of my 40 x 80 workshop.

Full of junk etc at the moment as I am doing a spring clean and moving/sorting stuff.
Excuse the mess.

Old Guy, I love the wooden boat. Here's one I am building with my dad:

I love the old boats.
A work in progress as my priority is the LIncoln to tow the boat with.
The 3.5 litre Rover V8 suits it nicely.
Boat is about 14 feet.

Here is the current incarnation of my 23 year old Craftsman workbench that I did a makeover on last winter. I added the two side extensions for the two roller cabinets to dock under. The left extension has a smooth steel shelving top set flush into the 2x4 framing. The shelf is a left over piece from a steel shelving unit my father-in-law gave to me. It is 1/8 inch steel with boxed edges and I backed it with one inch of scrap particle board and plywood. The right extension has a 1/8 inch diamond plate steel top that I cut to fit flush into the 2x4 framing and again supported with one inch of mdf and plywood. I got this piece of diamond plate from a neighbor that was throwing it into the trash. I plan on painting the extensions to match the center bench.

It's made by me.

I used 2x2x1/8'' for the legs, 4x2x1/8'' for the horizontals and 2x2x3/16'' angle to suport the top. The top is formed from a sheet of 10 gauge hot rolled steel. It sits on a sheet of 3/4'' MDF to deaden the sound.

I've made several of them over the years. People come over to my shop, see one and I end up making another. There's about $250. worth of materials in one.

We really know the reason she's out there....just to keep an eye on you to make sure you don't gouge or tear yourself up on one of your projects

Thank you sir. I don't have many other pictures because, truthfully, the rest is a mess right now. I am still organizing and cleaning up the space while at the same time, using the garage for my cutting workshop for a solid bamboo flooring job I am doing in my house. I must say I admire your workbench as well as your table saw stand. They look great. I need to get a welder and learn how to use it, but that will have to wait until the house projects are finished.

My workbench is an extention of my Toolbox, and runs the entire length of the Garage.
Sorry about the Mess, I have been working in my Garage all week on a friends car.

I like the chop saw layout. I don't have the room for support on both sides of my miter saw, but that's definitely the way to go. Thanks for the pictures.

I just put the finishing touches on my tall workbench in my 2-car garage (diamond plate edging for the worktop). The cabinets are used office cabinetry with roll-out file drawers, the base is square-tube steel and the worktop is a solid-core door ripped to width (it was free!). Work top is 6 1/2 feet long and 22 inches deep. Finished it up with pegboard.

All of my most commonly used power tools now have a home in the black cabinets. The roll-out drawers make it easy to get stuff out.

Thanks. I paid $70 for the pair of cabinets. They were already black, didn't even have to repaint them.

Hi Guys,
I have been hanging out here for some time and am truly amazed by your Garages!!! I have a single garage (its a mess and full to the rafters) where i have been restoring and rebuilding a '74 914 and more recently storing my KTM 200 exc, yes it is getting crowded!
My question is this: What is the best Bench Height or at least a good guide to go by. I am going to be updating my garage over the next few months and part of that is reconfiguring my existing bench. Once I actually do the real renovation (new roof design and possibly broader space re two car width), I will make a point of posting my progress. Thanks again for all of the great ideas.

Stand up work benches are usually 36 inches. Sit down work benches are usually 30 inches. Just like kitchen tables and countertops. What you build should fit your needs and height. If you're 6' 8" and have short arms....then you probably didn't play basketball.

Sorry forgot to say something about the 914. I had a baby blue one with the smaller engine in the early eighties. Great car, I liked the layed down seating felt like I was on the ground. The transmission went and so did the car. Send pictures of the car when you get a chance.
