Much easier to tape and finish with the rip in the middle. Tapered edges are nice but by no means are **** joints an obstacle to a pro finisher. I remember years ago when tapered edges were a new idea.
Pretty much every trim carpenter hates a tapered edge at the floor. Some finishers will float the bottom taper so the wall will be flat.
