Where do you keep your compressor?

This may sound like a no brainier but all the shops i've worked with had them outside in roofed closet like enclosure open to the elements.

Years ago I've keept my old craftsman 30gal in the shed for a while and never had a problem. Currently have a smaller 20galon Husky that i keep in a climate controlled garage, but its getting too small, must have more air. While craftsman is a 200$ piece of junk its ok, but if i spent 5-600 its a compressor different story!

Issue is that i don't have enough room in my 250sqft insane asylum for a stationary 60-80Gal. Or even Mobile 30 gallon at that.

Ultimate solution is to make a quick shell of 2x4's, slap some siding on and put it on a side of the house...should blend right in. Of-course it will accumulate dew water and all sorts of **** from technically being outside despite the roof over its head.

Am i being too paranoid? Where do you keep yours?

About 4' off the ground in a cabinet. The outside walls are uninsulated and the inside walls are insulated. The top is open to the rafters. There are several here that have the compressors in sheds/closets built onto the outside of their garages/barns.

Mine is in a back room of the garage, out of sight out of mind. I still hear it but it's not loud, depending where I'm at.

I built a 6' by 16' lean-to shed on the side of my garage. Compressor in one end, and room to store rakes, lawn mowers, etc. in the rest of it. A door on the end, and a door on the side near the compressor so I can get to everything.

My pump sits in the corner on the top shelf of my storage rack.
The tank is in another corner under the bench.
The drop pipe is 3 inch with a reducing tee to the tank 8 inches off the bottom.
At the bottom of that 8 inches the drop pipe reduces to 1/2 inch and a ball valve and a hose for draining.
The pump has a small car (maybe a Geo?) muffler on it for noise reduction and a cheap hot rod style paper filter.
Not much dust gets up there and I have never changed the filter.
The oversized drop pipe is to allow the air to slow down and cool.
I do get water out of the drop pipe drain but have never had any from the tank drain.

It can be a problem although when I was a kid we had a unit that was in the cold and not well cared for seem to work. Ideally though a spot above freezing would be ideal. It probably lasted so long back in the day because we used it for blowing up tires, since we became air dependent I moved it inside.

In a different building with the lines ran underground to the shop. Didn't want it where I had to hear it and didn't want it outside.

Just added this to my shop. 4" concrete floor, plenty of vents and louvers for air circulation.
Also has automatic tank drains that purges the moisture out of the tanks every 45 minutes, although, I'm not sure how they will work when it gets below freezing.
May install a small electric base heater.
Plumbed them through the wall into shop. All controls, air and electric are in the shop side. Freed up the space two 60 gallon compressors took and I can hardly hear them when they kick on.

In the corner of the garage by the garage door. Have the pump on the floor, tank a few feet off the ground on a shelf and a 2nd tank in the attic. I've thought about outdoors, but the hassle just isn't worth it for my setup.

One slick solution I've seen is below a basement staircase.

This is just what i was thinking until i thought about separating them, and it started to sound tad complicated for a simple compressor project...but now that i think about it ...not all that difficult. In fact i wanted to do both water heater and the compressor up in the attic. But having the whole house vibrate didnt sound healthy, i know i'd find some drywall cracks sooner or later.

I put a 20 gallon and a 60 gallon in my basement and ran 1" pex underground to the garage. The only annoying part is the trips to turn them on and off as I don't like to leave them on and full all the time.
I ran some low voltage wire when I ran the air line and electric out to the garage. Eventually I plan to wire up a relay so I can switch them from the garage.

Currently have a small craftsman oil free in the garage, but building a lean to outside next to my Ac, and mounting and building a 2475.7.5 on a pallet, and running black pipe Into the attic and running underground into my tuff shed out back.

Acuratechva - This is the only other one I have. Since taking it I ran the air lines from the pipe at the top left up to the ceiling and around my garage. The second picture shows where the pipe heads up to the ceiling.and then out to the middle of the garage. Hope this helps.

What is the gray panel made of? Plywood? I'd like to set up something like this. Where did you get that hose reel?

Thanks Xicaque. The panel is MDF with a few coats of enamel on it. I got the hose reel at Princess Auto for about $30.

Now just need to wire the 240v outlet, connect/attach some parts on the compressor, run some air lines into workshop, hang hose reel, move into place..damn getting tired just typing this..

I have a 5hp, 240V, 60 gallon compressor. It's in a concrete corner of my 26 X 26' shop.

It was noisy as hell for a few years. Then I mounted it up on rubber isolation blocks, I couldn't believe the reduction in sound.

Much quieter, I highly recommend this.

I have a 2-car attached garage. My compressor is in the basement. The air line is plumbed into the garage and through a pressure regulator/drier. The compressor is powered by a dedicated circuit controlled by a wall switch in the garage.

my 7 HP 60 gal is in the back corner of the shop. the air cooler is on a shelf above it to save space. the wall next to it has a shelving unit that i enclosed that blocks a lot of the sound. it's on rubber mounts too. i am looking for ways to quiet it down a bit more. probably hanging some soft stuff on the walls around it and putting a better muffler on the intake.
