Where Does One Get An Electric Die Grinder And Burr Bits

To make a long story short, I broke a spark plug in half, in my fine 3v Triton V8. All that's left is the electrode shield and the porcelain inside. Tried the Lisle tool and it failed to extract it. Called Lisle for other options and one of their engineers called me back at 9pm on Friday night to see if I had it out.

He advised me to use a die grinder with a Burr ball bit on it to grind out some of the porcelain so that the electrode shield could be tapped. A piece of the tool may have broken off inside as well. So a burr ball bit would go through that as well. Fine no problem there. Easy peasy.

Go to Lowes no electric die grinders. Ask if they have Burr bits. Shrug. Go to Home Depot no electric die grinders. Guy working the tool section didn't know what a die grinder or burr bit is. Live in the NE no Northern Tool.

My air compressor is too small to effectively run a pneumatic one. Can't use my truck until it's out. Can't get an appointment at the dealership until Wednesday.

I can get Burr bits at Grainger or Fastenal on Tuesday. .

Does anyone know where an electric die grinder and carbide burr bits can be acquired on a Sunday? Need to get some food soon. Lol Wednesday is a long way off.

Thanks for any suggestions! Myself and my cat would appreciate it if we have food. :D

I bet if you posted your location it would be easier to provide suggestions.

Would a Dremel and one of their small carbide burrs work? HD and lowes should both carry them.

Tractor supply had burrs and I think die grinders last I checked.

Sorry you're right. I'm in the New Haven, CT area. Can borrow a friend's car to get what I need. Thanks for the suggestion! I'll pop over to their website to see if they have any in stock.

The Big Harbor Freight Electric Die Grinder works pretty well.
https://www.harborfreight.com/14-in-43-amp-heavy-duty-long-shaft-die-grinder-60656.html $49.99 and use the 20% off coupon.
I get Carbide Burrs at several different places but Locally a place called Metal by the Foot has them. Not convinced that carbide is going to do well against porcelain, probably ruin the burr for sure, diamond might work best.

Thanks I'll take a look at HF. You're correct on the carbide burr ball that's only if part of the steel tool broke otherwise it's diamond for the porcelain. Thanks much!

Its pretty odd that Lowe's and HD didn't have one. I could've sworn they both carried them. The HF should do the job, you don't want to spend a ton on something you may never use again. They have "carbide burrs" at HF as well but they're sh#t. They may get the job done though. They look nothing like typical burrs either. I'd check Lowe's and HD website for burrs as I think they may carry them, the site will tell you if they're at your store, since it sounds like the employees there wouldn't be able to tell you if they do or not.

Looks like HF wins today. They have the die grinder carbide burr bits, and 1/4 shank diamond bits. Tractor supply only has pneumatic by me. Amazing Lowe's or HD don't carry any of this in store. We have a couple of locally owned tool stores, that are awesome and would have everything, but both are closed Sundays.

Save your receipt. If it gets away from you the HF unit likes to split in two where the metal nose cone bolts to the plastic housing.

Back about 5 years ago I did my 05 f150 and I had the same thing happen. Couldn't get the lisle extractor to bite. What worked for me was using a long drift punch and a hammer. Using the punch I was able to break up the porcelain just enough to use the pusher again and then the extractor would catch.

There is a thread here on GJ with my ordeal.

Oh boy isn't it a #$&:&*#?!!?? The kicker is it was a fleet vehicle. The plugs were supposed to have been changed 80k miles ago according to Ford service records. There's paint dots on the tips of all these plugs meaning Ford service records are wrong or they never did them and claimed they did under the fleet contract. Paint on the plug tips indicates production line installation and the new ones were already on the market the date it says they were changed. These are the old original plugs

Hope you found one!

BTW: The Lisle engineer a friend?

Thanks heading out in a bit. No not at all. Lisle must have the best damn customer service of any tool company. Couldn't believe how far they've gone out of their way to assist. Just amazing!

Interesting!

And damn refreshing. Gonna throw that in the back of my head for the next time I am considering a Lisle tool.

Thanks!

Thanks!

I had called earlier in the day and the engineer for that tool had already left for the weekend so they gave me his cell number. He gave me a few tips. Unfortunately, they didn't work out, but he called again later in the night to see if it came out. Really awesome. I already have a bunch of Lisle in my box. And even though this one didn't get the job done, no fault of Lisle I thank Ford for this mess, I will be adding more Lisle to my box as the need arises.

I have a few Lisle things.....My favorite is the magnetic socket holder in one of my road boxes. I think of Lisle like KD though.......Not for callbacks from a company Engineer.

Shocked the hell out of me. Looks I'm headed over to Sears to get a tap socket set made by Lisle. They've already sold me another product. :bounce:

They sell burrs at HF I seen them the other day they are either 7.99 or 14.99 can't remember I looked at a couple thinks and was going to buy some for my die grinder. Why not buy a electric die grinder on Amazon and over night or same day it? I've been wanting one myself to use indoors.

Lisle is super old school. They're also Dunham Tool and very easy to talk to a real person. I once sent 'em an email about shipping charges and they called me. They seemingly don't have the ability to figure shipping charges instantaneously so they pre-auth for more and later finalize the charge w actual cost.

Just Iowans.....

Well I wanted to get it done today since I have meetings etc tomorrow and wouldn't you know it HF was out of burr bits. So I'm just going to try a carbide steel bit.

The bottom thread of the Lisle tool pulled off inside the spark plug so user error on my part.Feel pretty stupid right now. I got my boroscope in there and identified the piece. It's pretty thin so a DeWalt carbide bit should go through it.Then I have a diamond bit for the porcelain that I found at Lowe's in the flooring section. Once the porcelain is out of the way I'm tapping it and pulling it with the cheaper NAPA service tool for Triton plugs

Would rather have bought a Makia, but if they HF works, I won't complain. Haven't had a use for one until now. I've got a shop vac zip tied next to the bore to **** up pieces and using moly grease to try and trap particles in it.

If it works I have the micro kit for shop vac and will gorilla tape it on the hose and **** up what I can. And use my compressor to blow out what I can. The engine has 177k miles on it and I was going to buy a new car anyway and use it for dump/Home Depot/Lowe's etc runs only. So not too worried if all the porcelain etc. doesn't come out. I bought it for $1k from a utility company in MA because I knew someone there. I only have maybe another 1k in it. No big deal. Just between cars right now due to an accident. Hopefully it will pull tonight!

Check Craftsman. I bought mine at Sears 25 years ago.

They just had Dremels. However they did have the Lisle tap sockets. No one locally had those in stock. And I had $24 in point plus the matched the web price which was $8 lower. So I only had to give them $3 for the sockets.
