Work may give me the chance to leave the cold of Maine and settle in the southeast as a regional manager. East coast from Fla to NC is open to call home. As a garage junkie hot rod guy with cars to re-register anyone have thoughts on a better place to live over another. Is there a resource to compare taxes and the like?

I know this may get moved so sorry bout that but I will build a new garage once settled :3gears:

North Carolina seems to be a good place. We definitely loved the Outer Banks (OBX) when we were there a week, though I know that the OBX is a vacation subset of NC as a whole. Seems like the weather would be more temperate in NC than the hot/humid Florida weather?

If you're a hot rod guy you should check out Knoxville. There's a great hotrod scene out here and in the smokies along with possibly one of the best roads (tail of the dragon) within rock throwing distance.

Radio Ron I am told Cary NC is just that. Concentrated area for relocated Yankees!

Realtor.com and the like seems to like Tennessee as well for weather and cost of living. No idea where this will all lead to but thought of moving barn to Maine or south is just too daunting. Will need to see how garage warrior makes out with auction!!

You are so right Rick. I am working with a bunch of guys from Alabama right now and it is like family wars of auburn vs bama and the one lone Clemson guy. This is serious. Watching patriots get spanked ain't all it's cracked up to be anyway!

Just south east of Raleigh, somewhat rural, close tu I40 & I95 and RDU airport...I am about 1.5 hours east of Raleigh, moved here from Toronto about 24 years ago, I like the Country living but like to be close to amenities....the fact that I can ride my Harley year round helps also... Classic cars and hot rods are quite popular around here also...

Rule out Florida, you'll be locked indoors with the a/c on max before the end of April, probably have a heat stroke tying your shoes in July.

Same for any part of Georgia outside the mountains in North Ga.

South Carolina has roads only slightly better than many 3rd world countries.

Tennessee or North Carolina is where I would start looking.

Just remember............

We don't give 2 shits how you did it up North!!

NC, near the coast, has very high humidity, just like all of the other areas near the SE coast.

The western part of NC (Ashville and west) is nice very little snow, if any. Summers are not as humid as the coast. That area is quite hilly, which might take some getting used to.

Georgia has a title tax law that replaced the older Ad Valorem tax on motor vehicles. Its main purpose was to find a legal way to capture private party sales (tax wise). If you bring motor vehicles into the state, you pay the tax on the title for each vehicle. After that you only pay a tag fee each year, $20, but the title tax is stiff, 7% right now (if I recall correctly) based on the State book value of the vehicle. A 2000 model Crown vic that has sat in a garage and only has 30K on it is valued the same as a 2000 model Police Interceptor that has a half million miles on it. The book has some really weird values for some vehicles, and we are seeing a lot of appeals of these values.

A family moving in with two or three vehicles is looking at a rather hefty bill just to title and register the vehicles in Georgia.

Georgia income tax is basically 6% of the Federal AGI, with some adjustments.

I also vote for east-central NC .... Raleigh-Durham region. Nice area. Wife and I lived in Charlotte back in the late '70s and loved it, but it has grown way too big now and is no longer such a nice place to live. Florida, Georgia and SC are too hot and humid in the summer. NC summers can be a little hot, but the mild winters make up for it and you get a nice change in seasons.

Be aware that you will be an "outsider" from up North and that not everyone in the South has gotten over "the war" yet!!

I like Asheville Nc- 4 seasons, none of them too extreme. Cool nights in the summer, some sporadic warm days in the Winter.

Check out city-data.com

In your search bar, type in: the city or county, state, city-data. It gives you all the necessary information you need to compare locations. It also gives you a cost-of-living index.

Stay the hell away from Cary,NC. I have a friend that had to remove her flowers from around her mail box at the road because they did not meet town code requirements. You can't find squat around town if you try looking for it by a sign, the local code set really small sign restrictions, the bushes hide them really easy. Think of how welcome you'd be if you fired up a welder and you're neighbor's TV went out, they'd crucify you over it, much less cranked a car with load mufflers. I'm in Greene County,NC. We're one of the poorest counties in NC. High tax rate and there's only about 20-30K people in the county. The upside is there's nothing here. My next door neighbor was 16 before he found out asphalt wasn't a hip disease. I'm about 20 minutes away from everything, Greenville, Goldsboro, Wilson, Kinston and I can jump on the intestate and be in Raleigh in an hour or catch I-95 and be outa state in about an hour or so depending if I'm going N or S. I'd stay away from the coast myself by at least 1-2 hour drive unless you like hurricanes and storms. I'm about 1-2 hours from the coast, it'd be 1 hour if the State of NC did the promised road projects.

I hope you can adjust to the extreme weather difference...It's so f-in hot and humid down there in the summer!

If I were you, I'd look in the western part of NC in the mountains...

Lived there when I was young. Should have stayed.

In the heart of Dixie.

Everything is within striking distance.

Beautiful mountains and valleys. The Blue Ridge. Smokey Mountains. Blue Ridge Parkway. Appalachian Trail.

Lots of retired northerners provide the cash flow. Lots of locals for the workforce.

But you will always be a "Damned Yankee".

Have lived in FL...Too hot! Although I have family in Pensacola. And it really isn't part of the south.

Atlanta....Too big!

Only other place in the south that I would consider is Charleston.

Actually, anywhere in western NC will do just fine. Even into nearby areas of TN. But Asheville has a genteel flavor along with an art community that makes a real interesting mix. Find an old house off Charlotte Street, near the Grove Park Inn or in the Montrose section near downtown. Or go north of town and find some acreage up a cove.

Man, I should never have left!

Oh, ......and when you go, take me with you!

We now live 1.5 hours south of Asheville, in the SC Foothills. A good place to retire. We have two of the nicer lakes in the Country, Lake Keowee and Lake Jocassee. If I want cooler weather, all I have to do is drive 30 minutes North to Cashiers, NC, or Highlands for the day.

I live in Maryland but also have a place in SC. Close enough to the beach to enjoy but far enough from the crowds where the pace is slow and too my liking. Looking forward to making it home in about 20 months.
Really boils down to what you looking for and how much your interests are part of your decision.

Well ...

I would not call Asheville "the Heart of Dixie", but I agree with everything else.

Many folks from FL actuallt live in western NC in the summer !

Western Carolina is full of half-backs. They moved down to Florida from up north and then moved halfway back.

Personally I like the Carolinas, but I'm biased. Charlotte, Raleigh and Durham area big and crowded. A little north of Charlotte are Huntersville and Mooresville. Both nice areas. Asheville is great if you like yankees, lesbians and liberals. Its a very artsy and expensive town. Has a great BBQ restaurant too.

Greenville, SC has really impoved over the years. Downtown is very nice and you can be in mountains in 30 minutes. SC's gas tax is among the lowest in the nation. No helmet law for motorcycles. But we are know for being in the bottom of the good rankings and at the top of the bad rankings.

I lived in Cary (yes, Concentrated Area Relocated Yankees). We left NC after 2 years, lots to like, some things not to like. The mountains of NC or Tennessee seem nice, a friend has moved around and after a stint in the Tennessee mountains is back there.

Family, friends, church community. That's what makes for a livable community.

I agree with all of the above. I lived in Charlotte for 4 years and it was great- I even lived for a year in Huntersville as mentioned, excellent place. Great area, CHEAP living and CHEAP real estate, plenty to do too. If I had to do it again I might look into Raleigh/Durham just to be closer to the coast and the job market is better there.

I'm not totally sure this is correct for those moving into the state. Their website indicates ad valorem for those moving.

Anyway, if you don't have a commute, I'd move to N. GA. Somewhere like Ellijay, Rabun, Blue Ridge... all great places to live. My dad bought a place in Talking Rock 3 years ago this Feb and loves it.

Born and lived in NC all my life except for my Army stint.

Come on down to the Piedmont area of NC. I'm about 40 minutes north of Charlotte.

Note: If you come here; leave your Yankee-*** ways and loud mouth talking and bitching about "That's not the way we did it back home" back North.
Too many Yankee ***-holes trying to change our Southern genteel ways as it is.

Oh yeah, don't bash my Confederate Southern Ancesters either or you will get one hell of an *** kicking.

I've thought about moving from the Southwest, mostly KY or TN, or anywhere with a moderate, green climate. There have been several similar threads on some of the other forums I read, and the bottom line is, there is no paradise. And places that were wonderful 20 years ago, aren't any more, thanks to growth as people flocked there. It's a moving target. Chasing low taxes is futile, as they all get you one way or another; either with property taxes, sales taxes, or income taxes.

Charleston has always struck me as a nice place to live near. Are you going to be driving or flying around to perform your job? Either way, take that into consideration obviously.

Ashville looked real nice the last time I visited but a bit too much of a small town for me and a bit too far away from a coast.

There's always South Beach :)

My son lives in Johnson City, Tennessee and we love the area, but it seems a lot of other people are discovering it, too.
