Here is a Hinsdale 1/2" drive SRA-1- socket, used to install and remove old Alemite grease fittings that were in use during the 1920's.

I don't usually go for the Hinsdale stuff at the flea, but I just could not leave this behind. I have no idea how complete this 'Chrome Nickel' set it, but there's a lot of it there. And the little carry box is pretty damn cool too. The ratchet is unbranded and just says Pat. Pend. None of the pieces are overtly branded Hinsdale except for the logo on the sockets.

I am breaking self-imposed vacation radio silence (first post on GJ since August 6th!) from my WiFi-enabled hotel room in Barcelona, Spain, just to say how effing cool that find is!!

Guessing mid to late 30's, and it's a great example of the use of cadmium plating, as an economy line rust proofing to chrome plating, well before WWII, as I have noted as a caution many times to those who associate it exclusively with WWII, seen also with Blackhawk, Vlchek and others at that time.

Geez, that IS very nice. Better graphics than this set I didn’t buy last Wednesday. (Note “No CN-50” stamped into lid.)
I did buy a hex-drive spinner Saturday, but the detent ball is jammed due to a bit of damage on that flat. I wonder if someone forced it into a square-drive socket at some point. I bought it to go with a handful of hex-drive forged and hybrid sockets I have. It’s the first I’ve seen outside a catalog, and maybe there’s some hope of a repair.

Nice set Username AIU.. I found a similar set for $5 today at the swap. Not quite as complete as yours but all the sockets are marked Bob Cat with the size in the middle. Had several of the square drive plugs too. Same box but a little rougher than the one you found and I didn't see any stickers on it yet but will try and clean it up a bit tomorrow. I'll have to dig around and see if I can add a few drive tools to get closer to a set. Ed.

Hinsdale is one of those brands we just don't have enough catalog coverage for. TA had a 1931 cat, and Tin Medic sent me some pages from the '46 cat (IIRC). But Unaiu's set looks different (and possibly older) than any sets I've seen in the '46 or the '31.

I've got a couple orphan 4-point sockets (5/8 and 1/2) and maybe some other pieces, if you need any, Ed. I posted some pics of them and the Bob-Cat set excerpt in post #79 linked here.

Here it is again:

Thanks for that info and cat cut Lugz. I wish my box had that neat Bob Cat logo...I'll be looking it over much closer now. I will take inventory of whats there tomorrow but I doubt I put too much effort into completing this set, it was just what turned up. Ed.

I keep forgetting to put this in the thread:

Hinsdale refrigeration set, both 9/32" and 3/8", with the corresponding adaptors for the refer ratchet. It is missing one or two sockets, so gotta keep an eye out for those.

Nice stuff, twertsy, as usual.

All this Hinsdale talk reminds me that I haven't updated my Hinsdale 3/8-inch drive 'WANTED thread' (see my signature block) in a long time.

Here's the way it looks now:

attachment.php

I added three (3) sockets and the hinge handle, but it's not right. Correct model number (H5J), shape and size, even has the hole for the tommy bar, but it doesn't have any knurling like the rat or like the hinge handle has in the catalog figure. Different steel finish, too. I am guessing this is slightly later production. It's a really nice hinge handle, and will do for now, but I am still looking for one with the knurled handle.

This is in my WANTED thread, but I need the following:

- H5J hinged t-handle

- HXJ8 extension (18")

- Sockets:
> SJ-12 (3/8")
> SJ-18 (9/16")
> SJ-20 (5/8")

EDIT: Oh, and the midget ratchet doesn't belong. Just for show!

Found that little open gear 9/32-inch drive reefer rat that Beemer has in a combo set upthread today at my flea. I'm going to stick it in my 3/8 set for storage unless/until someone needs it. I am used to Walden and Bonney refrigerator ratchets, and compared to those, this thing is downright sleek.

I recently picked up a couple Hinsdale 1/2” drive, standard depth, 4 point sockets. They’re old. Maybe from the 1920s or ‘30s. I’m looking for a Hinsdale catalog page or some reference material that lists all the 4 point sockets that were offered in the Hinsdale set around that time period. The two sockets I have are 11/16” and 7/8”. Thanks.

Jim C. (Who doesn’t need to start collecting another set of sockets, but looks like he’s heading down that road again.)

Best to post photos when you can, Jim. Our catalog references are VERY limited. TA had a cat purporting to be 1931, but I suspect it was a compilation of stuff from a couple decades. I have a few pages of socket drive sets from a colleague, and there are ten (10) 4-point sockets from 5/16 to 7/8, model numbers SQR10 through SQR28, but it's from later (1946). And Hinsdale had a lot of variations in the 30's from what I can tell. Twertsy and Unaiu have posted some fairly complete sets (see posts #82 and #97). Post #12 might also help.

Thanks Lugz! Yes, I checked earlier in the thread. I see there’s several sizes based on some of the sets others have posted here. I’m just looking for a comprehensive list. I poked around the internet too. I’m guessing 1/4” to 1” based on what I found on various sites, but who knows. I’ll try to get a few pictures posted.

1/4 drive reefer set no. 119. The refrigeration sets seem well represented here, and seem to have come in several variations.

Not sure if anyone saw this Hinsdale display I made last year. I actually made the display twice. The first time was for what I thought was the complete DOE set #1-#5. Shortly after I discovered there was actually a #0 wrench too. Once I acquired #0 wrench I remade the display board. If anyone is interested in the #1-#5 board please PM.

Thought that I had posted these before? Maybe over on another site--Anyway this is what I have accumulated over a large period of time--not a very common tool in this area. I found the Black box set at a auto swap meet in the past and could not believe the condition in relation to the other finds and it was complete! Wahoo--don't usually find a set.
Anyway, if there is someone out there that is a diehard Hinsdale collector-I would consider trading ALL(Except the black box set) of the shown items for USA made ratchets in working order(W/OMarks) or tool sets, wrench set as long as we can mutually agree on value. Don't want to piece it out-would make someone a nice fill in for a collection!! LMK if any interest.....Cranky:thumbup:
