It appears that the socket fits over the Ford crankshaft nut and is driven (by the slot) with the cross-pin of the Ford combination crank and lug wrench. This is a clever way of getting to the crank bolt when there is not enough room through the upper front spring clamp/starting crank guide to accept a square drive of adequate size for this job.

Spotted at a local flea for 15, but I let it stay as I'm cutting down on buying.

I hear that. I have so much of this stuff I don't know where to put it. Still could not resist this ratchet speeder and extension for ten bucks.

I picked up some Hinsdale Nickel Chrome 1/2 drive sockets Sunday. All 4-point opening. Two 7/8, a 3/4 and a 5/8. All spray-bombed, but that comes off easily.

I started collecting these Hinsdale 1/2” drive, 4 point sockets a few moths ago. I think I only need the 9/16” and 11/32” to complete the set. I have a few duplicates if anyone else is trying to make this set.

Jim C.

I found the 9/16”. One more to go.... 11/32”.

I finally got that 11/32” four point socket from site member, Kaervak. Many thanks sir!!! That completes my set!

I was happy to find this for $2 at the flea. Ole girl has been ridden hard and put away wet, but still holds sockets tight.

Merry X-mas to me.

I was fooling around on eBay a while back and spotted this, but it was far too expensive for my tastes. But I put it on my watch list, just to think about it. Well, after a while I got an email that, as a watcher, I am being offered a discount. Or, I can counter offer. So, at the end of the period, seeing as it hadn't sold, I put in a low-ball offer. Lo and behold, it was accepted.

A huge part of the reason I wanted it was the decal, and you can see why

The main reason I wanted one of these was that I had gone to one of those "world's biggest indoor garage sales" a while back, and while it was mostly a joke, I did find one guy selling an old toolbox full of misc. junk. $5. So I bought it, mostly as I didn't want to leave empty-handed. Well, got home and started looking through it and it turns out it was, amongst other things, an almost complete Hinsdale G-20 set. Only a couple of sockets missing.

Only missing the 5/8, 15/16, 1-1/8 and 1-1/4 sockets and the valve grinding attachment. I am pretty happy! Also, they sure stuffed a lot into these sets!

^ Quite the find there. I believe I saw that set listed just recently. Decal inside lid looks cherry.

Sales of vintage US made tools on Ebay are way down from where they were when I got into this four years ago. I am seeing a LOT of items languish in the listings for weeks, or being sold at auction with only a single bidder.

From what I understand, the seller being able to contact a prospective buyer and offering a discount on an item they've put on their "watch list" is a new thing on Ebay.

I have taken advantage of offers like that a few dozen times over the course of the last couple months, saving quite a bit of money in the process, particularly on Christmas gifts.

Bottom line: if you think you might be interested, click "add to watch list" and wait two or three days and see if the seller comes back to you with an offer.

It's been working for me, even though I don't collect Hinsdale. ;)

Yeah, I have done it once before. As is often remarked, people think what they have is gold, and while it might be, often it really isn't. I know a lot of antique dealers, and it really boils down to time. As in, how long do they have it? Most of the good ones need to keep inventory moving through.

March of last year, to be exact! How do I know? I was hosting the 2018 Garage Sale Thread, of course! :)

Well done finding a box with a near-perfect decal for that box-less set - which I remember well, Beemer. Persistence pays off.

Its funny, but people often wonder what I collect, and it boils down to a good logo. Nice decals, tools with good markings, that is what I really like. Hinsdale is one of the best.

Came across this nice little Hinsdale 1/2 drive socket lot in case with breaker bar and stubby extension. A few doubles as implied by the juxtaposition outside the case in the one pic. Overall really nice condition, defects are owners name lovingly engraved in cursive on about 20% of the sockets, and some flaking plating loss on the 1-1/4" socket.

Nice looking set there OTG. I think mine might be later? and in lesser condition, certainly as far as the box is concerned. Not sure if I will go off in pursuit of a matching ratchet, or cut it loose.

Probably ebay it for 50-75$. Lot of hinsdale collectors out there.
Thanks for your valuable insights, it's appreciated! I'm into it for significantly less, and I got a 1/2 drive Wizard ratchet and a small handful of clean Billings wrenches in the same haul. Might be nice to say I got those items for a net negative.

Lugz, I think this may be the missing hinge handle from the set you posted early in this thread. Not going to win any beauty pageants but the ball detent is nice and tight, works as it should. If that spot is still vacant and you want to do a horse trade please shoot me a PM.

It's not so much vacant or a glaring omission as a glaring (chromed, and smooth) stand-in. You have found the one I need and I am definitely interested. Look for a PM.

A 1920's Hinsdale Long Bend Offset Socket Wrench I found recently. It was in with a nearly complete set of P&C Short Bend wrenches.

The hex opening is 9/16"

I posted these a couple of years ago and just recently added one more.
Whew these are hard for me to find!
Hinsdale flattish shank deeep offset DBE. I would call it 80 degree offset.
I have not seen them in a catalog and don't know exactly when they were made.
Anyone have any they would part with?

Does anyone else have a Hinsdale screwdriver? I've not seen any in this thread.

I found one last week. On the handle it has the Hinsdale name/logo (barely legible unless you know what you are looking for) and the number "3164 R"

It's overall length is 7.1 inches, the shaft is 3.9 inches long and the flat-head tip is 15/64" wide. It has an 8 ribbed handle.

I found a Hinsdale round-shank double-offset DBE wrench (25/32" x 3/4") at the flea yesterday. I needed it for the set I am trying to build with onesy-twosy finds. It's a "mixed" set (from different production periods), as you can see. The one I just found and the 7/8" x 13/16" just above it are pre-"HD" pre-"Chrome Vanadium Steel" series. LesserSon is holding a CVS HD 4 for me and a future trade that should be one of those size combinations if I want to split them up and go pure "HD".

Any interest in this wrench? If so, I can set it aside for you.

Here is my little M11 set that I was able to complete thanks to Mark (Oldtuleguy). I originally found it for a few dollars at an estate sale, but it had two 11/32 sockets and no 3/8. I'm wondering if that may have been an error from the factory. Mark had the correct period 3/8 to finish it up.
