I have a 650sq ft 2 door garage that is insulated but gets very cold in the winter. Want to put a 45k btu ceiling mounted ng furnace in place. Been searching the forum threads and need to find out experience with each and where to buy. I also want to make sure I get the entire installation kit.

Or should I consider another brand heater?
Thanks

Both are solid brands. Check CL to see if you can pick one up now, instead of waiting for prices to go up in winter.

I have a 60K natural gas Hot Dawg for my 24X36 garage with an 8ft ceiling. Bought it from the HVAC company and they installed it. Never had an issue with it.

45k for 650 square feet.....that is insulated?

Too much in my opinion

Look on Craigslist.........do the install yourself

It is partially insulated. 2 Garage doors are not insulated with one wall brick, attached to house and the 2 other walls have just wall insulation.

The BTU calculator says I need 38K btu for that size room.

I only see How Dawg and Reznor in 45K configurations. Are there any other alternatives?

Solaroincs in Rochester Mi. makes alot of Reznors heaters
I personally have a 3-1/2 car garage, Insulated and drywalled.
I installed a Mr Heater BigMax heater 75k btu 5 years ago.
I love it.
I have never had a single issue.
My Garage is now heated all winter long..

Since installing i have also installed a between the studs
A/C. Which I like much better then my Chinese made split air.

Not many heaters below 45k btu...........you never mentioned your location, but think your calculation is close enough.

I just want to throw this into the mix. If money is plentiful and you're looking at heating full time....TO ME it would be worth it to look at the Modine Effinity line.

The smallest unit heater in that series is 55,000 BTU/Hour.

The advantage is they are high efficiency. 93%

So, they vent with PVC...but you do have to a condensate drain. We have 3 of them at work and they are really nice. You won't find one used and the price is at least twice what the 80% models go for....so it's going to depend on how much you use it as to whether you can justify it or not.

Thanks, your thread was very helpful. I am getting the Reznor 45k UDAP. It is sold locally and I don't have to pay any shipping. I also like the way it looks.

I just need to figure out how to mount it to the ceiling and get a exhaust kit then run the electrical and gas.

Now I need a recommendation for a good thermostat? Are you guys using a low temperature thermostat? I would really like one that I could control with my phone.

Hopefully will be done this month.
Thanks

I have a 45k Hot Dawg in my garage, which is a mildly insulated 1,000 square feet

Here is my heater installation thread

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=325943

The complete install was around $525

You'll enjoy the heater. I have a Modine. Like others said no difference.
I like that they don't take up floor space.

I have had good luck with two Reznors and had a problem with a Modine. My experience and certainly not a representative sample of their products.

Is that garage connected to your house? Some Reznor units are rated for residential use so they can be put in a connected residential garage. No idea about anything else.

I decided to buy the Reznor heater and installed last week with a low temperature thermostat. Thought I would share the pictures.

Install looks great! What's your impression of the heater? Completely satisfied? anything you'd do differently now? I'm in the process of planning an install in my double garage. Thanks for any feedback!

Got the 85k version of that one, and it's been flawless for 7 years. What T-stat did you use? I found a $20 low-temp stat, which works well, but of course is not wifi-capable. That would be a nice feature.

I just had a small reznor installed in my well insulated shop. Works really well. Using a digital thermostat but if the price is right would consider a wifi one.

reznor units are very reliable....i did have issue's with draft inducer motor's on some of there larger unit's with heavy runtime though...the housings on the motor mounts would give way and get noisy....a little bailing wire and cable tie fix did the trick.
did you install a gas /electric shutoff near unit...couldn't tell from picture's
just thinking like a service guy here....we like those things:beer:

Re the low temperature thermostat, check the specifications on the heater you bought.

Some manufacturers warn against continuous operation at thermostat settings below 50 degrees because of condensation issues and potential corrosion in the heat exchanger.

Just curious, but how big is the garage you are heating with the 45k Reznor? I have a 33x24x12 and I'm debating between the 45k & 60k Reznor.

I just installed a Modine 100k Hot Dawg in my 36x48 shop. So far I'm very pleased. The colder winter weather isn't here yet, but it won't be long.
