Original PST is stashed away for sentimental reasons. Original wave is stashed away due to weight. I really like it if I'm on duty with work gear. I carry the skeletool cs now. I really like that thing.

That Wave looks cool though. I like that hte knives are on the outside. Might have to try one.

have a surge in the garage, halfway dead from overuse. I should probably send it back and get it tightened up. I tried cutting some 1/8 steel cable (trailer seal) with it and it messed up the pivot. great tool though, you can do a LOT with a surge.

I carry a skeletool clipped on my pocket every day, I can't remember the last day that I didn't reach for it and use it to fix something. Best practical pocketknife ever!

Why buy a copy of the real thing? Leatherman is in Portland, OR. and they are guaranteed too and they have great customer service. I don't know where you get better steel from but I'm sure it's good because I never had any issues with any Leatherman including the original.

Our shop at work all had Gerbers. Several of us had the pliers actually break. Certainly not better steel with any of the ones we used. 50% failure rate out of 6 within a year. We've since replaced all of them with Leathermans. Zero failures in a decade.

My daily carry is a Leatherman Wave. Can flip out the blades with a single hand. Also the handles aren't parallel on the pliers when the pliers are closed. On the Gerber, it was easy to get pinched with the handles. The flip out pliers was a neat idea, but I use the knife more frequently than the pliers.

Maybe we got a bad batch, but a quick look in Google, others have reported the same issue.

They are both made in Portland, OR. Better steel? I doubt it. Warranty is exactly the same with the exception of 25 years for Leatherman and as long as you own it from Gerber. My father has a Gerber, i'm not impressed with it. I'll take my Wave any day of the week.

U.S.A. made wave custum leather case made by friend had gerber sent in for warranty for broken pliers tip sent me a new one no problem but they redesigned the knife tip away from the pen style tip I hated it so much I switched to the wave

I dunno, i have heard of everything breaking, I broke my first skeletools pliers myself. It ***** too, because i actually picked the serrated blade for a replacement instead of my original straight blade

. However, I had one of those old Gerber's and never remember using it much because all the screwdrivers on it sucked, and the pliers had a lousy odd angle on them because they aren't properly shaped.


I also have a Victorinox SwissTool, and while guys on EDC forums covet them as the "snap on" of multi tools, I would say they are a definite downgrade from a top of the line leatherman. Once again, the screwdrivers ****, just like Gerber, and the pliers aren't burly enough to be heavy duty, yet they made the tips way to wide and thick to be anywhere close to a needlenose.


Anyone have an SOG? once again, the guys on EDC forums covet them, however, I will hold off until i actually hear someone who works on stuff give an opinion. The pliers on them look neat, with that gear system.

Sorry Bob, I think you are in the Minority on this one but it's OK. Some people like pain so thats the right tool for you. Gerber is a good tool and the pliers come out fast but the rest is slow. The pliers aint all that and pinch. The Leatherman Wave is fast with it's knives but is also a quality tool. The wave has an excellant file, serrated blade, flat blade and really usefull needle noe pliers.I won't say either one is better quality than the other but when it comes to user friendly the Wave is the hands down winner in my book. I own both. My gerbers and Mac labled polished stainless steel and about 20 years old. Havent used them since I got a wave for Christmas the first tear they came out around 98. To say the Leatherman ***** obvious shows you never owned one. Really the only Multi tools that **** are the cheap knock offs of both. I don't like the SOG but it's still a quality tool.

I have a wave that I love, the rounded handles make cutting much nicer. I can remember cutting nine wire with the regular leather man and having the impression of the handles in my palm. I have had a gerber multi tool but it used to pinch my hands, can't remember exactly why or how it pinched them, but I remembered I did not enjoy it. I did think the one handed operation was neat, but not needed most of the time. I have a super tool on my back pack and it is nice as well.
