Which panel for outdoor power?

Wife and I are looking at making some improvements to the back yard area, and from an electrical standpoint that includes some additional lighting and possibly a hot tub.

The question is, where should I run the power from? The easiest solution would be to run it off the detached shop, which has its own subpanel and enough open breaker spots. It would be a relatively short underground run to the back patio where the lighting and potential hot tub would be. However, I don't know if this is acceptable by code--can I feed exterior things that are next to but not actually within the structure, off of a detached building?

The other alternative is to run off the main panel in the attached garage; I could come out and run outside underground like I did the feeder for the workshop, but that's a long run and a lot of digging. I could also run inside the wall of the garage and laundry room but that's a lot of drywall and holes to drill. I have a feeling the exterior run would be easier...

Hot tub panels typically just have a breaker for the tub.

You would need a separate subpanel.

And the power for the lights needs to originate from the structure they are on.

This is similar to having a 3 way switch in the house to control the light above the man door on the detached garage. The power for the light needs to originate from the garage subpanel.

Did you just make all this up?

How big is the wire going to the garage? You can feed it that way but it needs to have the capacity to power a greedy tub.

Workshop has a 90A feed.

And now I've looked, and dang that's a lot of power for a hot tub :eyecrazy:

Looks like I might be opening the walls...

I think lot/most are 50A. The 90 service will run it. There are a couple rules specific to them, it's been a while since I read it.
