Wife and I are looking at making some improvements to the back yard area, and from an electrical standpoint that includes some additional lighting and possibly a hot tub.
The question is, where should I run the power from? The easiest solution would be to run it off the detached shop, which has its own subpanel and enough open breaker spots. It would be a relatively short underground run to the back patio where the lighting and potential hot tub would be. However, I don't know if this is acceptable by code--can I feed exterior things that are next to but not actually within the structure, off of a detached building?
The other alternative is to run off the main panel in the attached garage; I could come out and run outside underground like I did the feeder for the workshop, but that's a long run and a lot of digging. I could also run inside the wall of the garage and laundry room but that's a lot of drywall and holes to drill. I have a feeling the exterior run would be easier...
