Like the title says. I want a good stiff corn broom. Even the “stiff” brooms at ACE are pretty flexible and not like the ones my parents had when I was a kid.

Menards has had some in the past. Still not like the old days, but ok. My home town had a broom factory. All of our little league umps had corn wisk brooms & everyone used local brooms.

Check this one. Don't own one, but most of their stuff is top notch.

I hope there are some good replies to this. RTM's looks promising, but I want one in the hand first.

I had to retire my old, broom corn shop broom recently, as the bristles were worn down to the band. I bought a new one at ACE, and it *****. Way too soft for a worn concrete shop floor.

I used to get some really nice corn brooms at the local hardware store BEFORE they became affiliated with ACE corporate.

from a 2012 conversation on the topic:

As for broom corn, I asked about this last month at Shaker Village -- they get all of their broom corn from overseas. Evidently, it is a very
labor intensive crop to grow. The Shakers were well known for their brooms.

The other midwestern place to witness broom making is in Arcola, IL, where they have an annual 'Broom Corn Festival'. Arcola is deep in the heart of one of the Amish communities. Evidently the Amish are also well known for their brooms.

These guys made some finishing burnishers I have (friend put together a group buy) , but they are gone now. Looks like 2021 was the last news from them, selling their stuff.

Industries of the Blind still makes them, but they sell by cases on their website. Our local Lions club sells them at various businesses around here.
Makes sense now why my parents had good brooms. My moms step dad was blind and he sold brooms and mops over the phone. He’d make calls all week and then grandma would take him to the warehouse to pick up and distribute the brooms on Saturdays.

Gordon Brush seems to offer a lot of different options. I use their Speedy Corn broom, but not sure it's stiff enough for what you want.

I picked one up at a local Mennonite store a few years ago. I think it is probably the type / stiffness you are looking to get. So if there are any places near you of that type check them for brooms.

Things I like and am looking for in a corn broom are a fair amount of stiffness for sweeping using compound or oil dry, tightly packed bristles for the best coverage and a good, comfortable wooden handle.

Is that too much to ask?

No Amish/Mennonite communities within six hours drive of here.

A household broom has about a 3/4” handle. A commercial broom has about a 1-1/8” diameter handle and is more filled out and stiffer. i bought the company brooms from Lions Industries for the Blind.

When storing the boom -

hang it so the bristles dont touch the ground

or flip it upside down so they face up

Over time the bristles bend sides ways and then it ***** and doesn’t sweep very well
