I’d like to ask some questions about his bench. If it still looks like this? Has it worked out or what changes would he make if doing it over now? What/where did he find the metal edging - it used to be commonly available but I can’t seem to find it.

Hard to see exactly if that edging is an angle profile or or just on the one front face, but stairway nosing could trim out an edge nicely if you can live with an angle profile. It has a curved front face and is aluminum. I also believe there was even choices for polished or dull surface finish.

Its available at the big box stores in smooth or ribbed designs. I ordered mine online from somewhere years ago because I needed a bunch of it and bulk prices were better online.

Here is some on my stairway. Smooth edge on front for a clean look, ribbed on top for slip resistance in the case of my application.

That photo comes from a really old thread started back in 2007 - I remember saving that photo as inspiration for my own build over ten years ago!

Default My personal slice of heaven

Looks like Crewbus hasn't been back to the site since 2010, so he probably won't respond, but there's more photos of the garage to scroll through

You could get that edging at Industrial Metals just off the 5 in Sunland :)

Thanks for the head’s up. I remember seeing that metal as trim between adjacent differing floor types way back in the 70’s. Now I can’t find it.

As for the stuff at Home Depot/Lowe’s it doesn’t come in long enough lengths to be useful for this purpose. Besides, all I’ve seen of it is ribbed, not smooth like I want. Thanks guys.

Dan,

Maybe something like this. Looks like this company has different widths.

Thanks Randy. Yeah, I found that on Amazon too and decided it is my backup choice if I can't find the shiny pre-drilled stuff I'm looking for.

I don't know if something like this would work. It requires a groove.

I saw that stuff too. The smooth finished one would work. The kerf left by my table saw would be too wide to retain the 3rd leg but I could put HD Construction adhesive in it and "squish" the 3rd leg in there. It could never come off again but that's probably ok.

Not mine. The only air cooled stuff I own gets used in the yard. Nice setup, though! Remindes me of a gag part I used to have...

That is a really nice bench setup!

Looked around Home Depot and found this today. It's some kind of metal trim for drywall.

Obviously, this bench is for clean stuff, not hammering/beating on. Not that I do much of that anymore but I have a small all steel bench on big 6" steel casters for that. A Craigslist find future project that needs "attention".

I had a leftover 4x8 sheet of OSB from my recent shed build and I bought an 1/8" sheet of underlayment to finish to make it look better. I used a Behr poly stain on it but I have to admit that stuff is crappy. Instructions tell you to leave a wet edge but that's basically impossible. Even though I went two coats with sanding between you can still clearly see the brush strokes. Oh well, it IS a garage bench. I put 3 coats of clear semi gloss polyurethane on top. The metal will finish the edge hiding that it's two sheets, not one. I'll use self-drilling screws every foot or 18 inches to attach it to the OSB.

That fits well and looks great, I like the lip at the edge.

Me too for looks. But if I ever put anything heavy on that top I'll have to remember to lift before taking it off or I might catch that lip and bend it up - UGH.

I plan to put some kind of small rubber mat. in the middle to use while making repairs to small things. The top will eventually get scarred up but oh well. $11 for a new sheet of 1/8" underlayment.

Wow, that is one good looking customized workbench, the edging really sets it off. Classy, for a "clean" jobs workbench. I think you just set a new standard for what a workbench can look like. Nicely done!

I'd love to take credit for it but it's not my design. That belongs to an old GJ'er, "Crewbus" who hasn't been around in 10 years. I just loved the way his looked and I am copying the hell out of his design!:willy_nil

But thanks anyway!
