Is there anything behind you that could be reflecting on the back of the lens? That is usually the problem in fab shops.

Mine (Miller Elite) does it when the batteries are going dead even though it's supposed to be solar powered. It's a good, comfortable helmet, but mine eats batteries for some reason.

I've been dealing with the same problem. In my case, I determined it's simply because the mask starts from almost clear compared to older and cheaper auto-darkening masks that start in the shade 3-5 range before darkening. It's still filtering the harmful UV rays, but you get to see a brighter flash at the start of the arc. I'm not sure if you're experiencing the same thing, but I wasn't getting "flashed" in the traditional sense (burning eyes, headaches, etc), it was eye fatigue as if I had looked at a bright light.

Edit: I never updated the thread, but Miller sent me a new mask and it operates the same way

X-mode is supposed to trigger the lens based on the arc magnetic field.

So it could be that aspect.

Or it could be the batteries, or the sensitivity setting, or the delay setting.

Or the sensor(s) being blocked in various ways.

RTFM first.

Maybe call or contact Miller if you need some help figuring out what is going on.

...recently I git flashed several times....

Next door neighbor woman has nothing better to do?

Sorry, I could not resist. Your thread title cracked me up!

I agree with other who have suggested to check the batteries. I have a similar auto-darkening welding helmet, and when the batteries start to get low it does the same thing. That is when I know to replace the batteries.

thanks for the tips. I just put in new batteries. I never had problems before with it. I'll clean it up some. maybe looking into a new screen. I'll change the settings so delay is short.

I start from clear also. What I get at times is the screen not going dark and im looking at the bright puddle. I don't realize it at first until I started into the weld

I usually put the delay setting to LONG, to minimize the dark screen quickly popping back to clear mode before redarkening.

Delay is how long the screen STAYS dark after the 'weld' (whatever is triggering the helmet to go dark) is 'done'.

Short delay means that the helmet will QUICKLY go to clear/light when it thinks you are 'done' welding (or when it looses the arc signal that told it to go dark).

YMMV.

Mine was doing the same thing, thought it was the welder, checked the gas pressure, the wire feed and speed, settings. To finish the job I was working on I went back to my old "nod down" helmet. Problem was gone. So blaming it on the helmet. Haven't checked the batteries but I betting that's what my problem is also. So check the batteries. Bcd. QUOTE]

While not addressing your problem directly, I did want to point out that the helmet provides UV protection at all times - even when it's clear. So even if it doesn't dim down, your eyes are still being protected from harmful UV light.

what could be the damage done to my eyes with the auto dark helmet not going dark?

There is no damage to your eyes. That is the point. Your eye will still hurt as your iris constricts really tight, really fast. It is the sourness of over using a muscle, not any damage.

Without a helmet's UV protection, you are cooking your optical nerve.

Uhm tastes like chicken.

Getting flashed is why I went back to a normal welding helmet. Just not worth my eyes when I can aim, flip my head and begin welding. I had a miller too.

I have posted this about a zillion times over the years and it amazes me how many weldors have no clue and/or don't believe me.

autodarkening lenses have a lamination of several different things, one of which is "band pass" glass. you won't be harmed (flash burned) if the batteries or sensor fails...

Read above:

The only thing that will happen hen you get flashed by an autodarkening helmet is slight eye discomfort from looking at a bright light. No different than getting your picture taken with a camera flash. The helmet always provides UV protection at all times.

I will second or third the batteries. My miller helmet was doing the same thing earlier this year and battery replacement solved it. Had nearly 8 years on the original!

I have Miller welders so went with a Miller auto darkening helmet after having some no-name helmet for years. The first Miller lasted a year or so. It's replacement didn't last six months!

Did some research and found a lot of complaints about Miller auto helmets.

Bought a Lincoln and it has been working great for over a year.

Still don't want a red welder though!

Hi, Guys I am about to buy a Miller Digital Infinity Helmet whats your reviews on it?

I recommend the Miller, the key features for me. X mode & auto off, turn on once, each job cycle .

2nd
X mode causes auto dark to kick in with the arc. Bright light and sun ignored.
