I may be guilty of breaking a few 12-point sockets.

I look at that and ask myself, how is that in anyway better than six point bolts?
I really don't know.

You can impart more force for a given head diameter. Same deal as triple square vs. torx.

Why things simply cannot be designed for the larger 6 point head to be fitted, I have no idea.

I bought a whole set for 12 point bolt heads. Hardly get used but I have them when I need them.

So would you guys say it’s worth having a set of 3/8 deep Metric and SAE 12 point sockets?

I have 3/8” standard 12 points in mm/SAE, as well as standard size 1/2” 12 points... although I don’t see the purpose in 1/2” drive 12 point sockets under 22mm or so.

I’m a DIY’er, never ran into a 12 point bolt before. I have used 12 point 1/2” drive on suspension components.

Ya I would. Something not incredibly expensive should do just fine for the average guy.

I bought some used Craftsman.

You will need them eventually.

Head Studs, Driveshaft bolts, exhaust studs. I'm sure there plenty of 12 point fasteners out there.

Besides most peoples wrenches are 12 point. Most of my ratchet wrenches are 12 point. I have 6 point wrenches for stuff that is T.A.F. but yeah 12 points aren't the devil. If you have space for them, buy another set of socket organizers and chuck them in a drawer you do don't open so much.

honda civic clutch/flywheel takes a 13mm and a 17mm 12pt (i think i could have the sizes wrong).

personally, i use 6 point unless its a wrench, in that case there all 12 point in my box. havent seen a 6 point box end yet.

Have a few 6 point box ends - one was almost a necessity way back when - IIRC the '50's Chevy pickups had hex bolts on the clutch plate - needed a 6 point wrench or they would round off .

Anyway, depends on what kind of a mechanic you are:

I'm actually surprised Harley never partnered up with snap on or the other guys just to sell a pile of premium tools at an above premium price long term. Somebody would buy it. Hell, they could then drop the scooter prices.
