Why do Armstrong, Craftsman and others make their 3/4" breaker bar the same length as their 1/2" bar ?

Are they using the same forging die for the handle and just changing the head ?

I'm pretty sure the handles are always thicker to handle the increased load that is likely to happen but finding long length breaker bars in 3/4 is difficult if not impossible. I have 24" 1/2 drive breakers but the longest 3/4 I've seen is 18".

Northern Tool always has 40" bars on the shelf...

I don't think they make them long because of weight, and because they would bend.

A solid bar of steel will bend much easier than a hollow pipe. And when you are talking about the torque numbers of 3/4"....it's easy to do.

Say what?
I can guarantee my own ability at bending a "tube" opposed to a round solid given the same material and outside dimension.

You can always put a pipe on it to make it bigger, but you can't practically make it smaller to work around obstructions.

I'm pretty sure a 3/4" breaker bar is made with the intention of piping it. Why else do they make the handle fit so nicely in a pipe?

I wondered this same thing a year or two back. I just sucked it up and got the Snap-on setup, which is to say a ratchet head, breaker head and 36" handle. This may be too rich for your purposes.

You can get a williams head ( basically the same thing) for alot cheaper.

I asked about this some months ago. I work in a shop where cheater pipes are verboten.

They leave them short to fit nicely in the box and also a lot of people will put a cheater pipe on them.

There are some companies that make 36" + ratchets and breaker bars, we use the Titan 1" drive 42" bars at work, throw and adapter on them for 3/4 or even down to 1/2"

Oh, and I was putting enough torque on one of the Snap On handles to very noticably bend it

And believe me, I use it enough to make it worth having a long 'un.

Good point, this is undoubtedly the way to go for most folks. I'm on toolsdelivered but I'm not seeing a 36" handle. I wonder if Williams has one or if you can use the Snap-on one. Or you could make your own.

Then again, I'm a cheapskate. It's not like I paid full retail for this thing.;)

The only problem with the Williams head is that it requires a 13/16" handle, where as the Snap-on, has a 15/16" handle. Snap-on used to make longer handles in the 13/16" size if you can find one. If you have to just slide a pipe over the 20" handle. I have a tekton breaker bar as well too.

I bought mine from here...

The pin in the S*K is thicker-looks to be 9/16"? than the one in the 40 inch long Titan (which is a bolt rather than pin) that looks to be an M10 but is not a true axle bolt (doesn't have the definite step to a larger diameter than the thread diameter) both 3/4" drive bars
