Took the vise apart and cleaned it up today. Definitely were some metal shavings in the lead screw. Now that it has been cleaned out and re-greased it is much smoother. Popped the dented cap off, I will reach out to Wilton to see about a replacement. Hammer seems decent enough, I'm sure it will get some use.

Just ordered mine from zoro for the $279.30 shipped price. Glad I found this deal and thanks for all the good info here, this will be my first vise so I hope I got a good one that will last. Now I really need to get this bench build going this week.

Received mine from Amazon/Coastal. Some dust and scuff on end cap, no big deal. It does have some light brown streaks on the anvil portion that I’m assuming is some form of surface rust? Should I use steel wool to knock that down?

I cleaned up my Wilton's factory grease and applied some Castrol grease.

Received my 2nd 75th Wilton 1755 vise, note the color variation between the two. 2nd one came from Coastal but shipped out of ATL from a place called MEDCO auto distributors, came packed better with an outer box and nylon strapping, no paint issues or damage just dust like the 1st one.

Huh? They both have paint rubbed off the dust cover....

Not that it's a big issue, but clearly the packaging could be better. Virtually every picture posted in this thread shows the paint worn off the dust cap, and/or dents.

Not the newest one, it is just like a grease smudge on the end, But I was expecting that plug to be dented in, but I agree, they don't pack these near good enough for the weight and abuse they take in transit from being thrown around. Seems maybe the foam in place would at least help stop the movement in the box and the rubbing issue? :dunno:

They could also use brown hard shipping paper and it's more green.

Gotcha...at least neither is dented even though I'm positive Wilton would send a replacement dust cover.

With modern manufacturing and shipping there's no way of telling where a company will try to save a few pennies, and I guess it's better in the packaging than the vise!

One thing I will say to everybody buying these is that the jaws Wilton puts on these has been reported to be a powdered, compressed metal type that is very hard, but frequently cracks. I suspect that's an area where they're saving money compared to the machinist line.

I just bought two 1760s and while both were in really nice shape (one NOS) the one had chunks broken off the top edge of both jaws, and even the NOS one had a hairline crack where something hit the very edge of the jaw and put a tiny 1/32" chip in it....crack went all the way to the back edge, turned and came back to the front.

I'd recommend getting a set of KMScott's jaws. I just got a set from him for one of the 1760s and they are amazing! They look great, and aren't going to chip/crack unless you really abuse them and even then I think it would be a challenge.

If I get time I'll try getting pictures of the cracked 1760 jaw just for giggles...I didn't even see it until I removed the protective oil/paste they had on them.

Was wondering how hard those are to knock out from the inside? nothing too hard? was thinking about taking the paint damaged one out to work that issue?

Thanks for the tip on the jaws , yeah his stuff looks killer!

The dust cover comes out really easily. Remove the dynamic jaw and run a length of dowel rod through the nut and tap it out with a hammer. I use a round wooden dowel that I've sanded to have a curved end, or a piece of steel also with a curve profile to the end so it doesn't dent the cap from the inside.

The dust cap is pretty soft steel so even if it does get a dent you can usually smooth it out pretty easily. Place it on an anvil, or similar surface, so that the exterior part is on the anvil, and you're looking at the inside cupped part, then use the rounded ball end of a ball-peen hammer to tap out the dents. Sometimes you have to go back and forth between the inside and outside, but in a few minutes you can get them to the point that they look really good...maybe not quite new, but close.

To tap on the outside I've even used a ball-peen hammer in a vise with the ball end pointing up. Put the dust cap on the ball, and use another hammer from the other side.

Looks like the price is not coming back down either?

My understanding is that the 75th anniversary special ends in 12 days. Whether you will flat out no longer be available to order then - or, whether a few will trickle out as close outs, I can't guess.

Either way, it looks like the only price of a 1755 is going to be back to $499 before long.

I paid $299 from Zoro with a 30% off code.

I'm looking to get one of these before the end of the year - does anyone know of a good deal currently? Any good Zoro codes expected in the next couple of days?

Thanks!

It isn't a great code, but "Promo" will get you 20% off until midnight CST Saturday. That would make it $319.20 shipped.

I got mine for Christmas as a gift from my parents. Really hoping they got it at the $299 price since this was a big gift.

Got it installed on the bench this weekend. The box the vise was in was damaged but it all was inside another box and the vise was good.

I have been watching the price daily, don't see any good deals lately but interested to see what happens after time time Dr.Johnnyfever mentions above? will they go up or on clearance? Cant imagine they will pull them back from vendors?

Would probably do that if I could get the code to work - it gives me "Coupon code is invalid or unrecognized", which is a different message than some of the others I tried (which say "expired"). Maybe it's tied to an account?

Interested in grabbing one of these by the end of the year also. Anyone else know of any good deals by the end of the year? Thanks in advance.

I'm trying to register my vice but I don't know where the serial number is listed. Is it the stamped numbers on the threaded bolt for the handle? No other numbers look exclusive to my vise.
