Well already took the plunge but wanted to see everyone’s thoughts on my newer Wilton drill press. I believe it’s a Jet at heart? I wanted an old USA one but this one was 10 mins away and $80! Says it’s a 12 speed cat no 2550. I think I did well.

I wouldn’t think twice if it’s in working order. I’ve got the variable speed model of that and luv it.

That looks like my harbor freight 20". I wonder if they were made in the same factory.

You didn't do well you did great.

That looks very similar this 20" drill press that Harbor Freight is selling for $599.

I have that Harbor Freight 20" drill press(paid $300=$399-25%) and like it very much. I bought a set of 5 keyless chucks from ebay for $100 and even my Harbor Freight hating machinist buddy had nothing but good things to say about it. (until I told him it was from Harbor Freight then he hated it but couldn't come up with any reasons why)

I know there was another seller that had a similar model with an adjustable casting that you could tighten as the quill got loose from wear. If you remove the black plastic piece that holds the On/Off switch you'll be able to see what model it is. If it's a solid casting it's not adjustable but if it's split down the middle with adjusting bolts holding it together obviously it has the ability to be adjusted should it ever need it.

Well I did some quick research and yes the only bad is it’s an import but not China. From what I see yes Wilton doesn’t make them the rebrand Jets. I really was amazed that the equivalent Jet is 1k! Haven’t checked run out but looks awful straight running. Going to clean her up and maybe look for a Jacobs keyless chuck. What’s everyone think of them? Any certain model I should look for.

Yeah, you did real well @ $80.

I found the model 2550 in an early 2004 Wilton Jet catalog, that separated the drill presses from each other and your model was in the Wilton section. So, was this a Wilton model before Jet? The HF model definitely looks like a clone of your Wilton 2550 drill press.

I'd definitely be interested in some user feedback after you've used it awhile.

Dorset. England.
I have about 95% the same drill, branded Ajax (one of the names that got slapped on them in the British market) was given it, needs some rust removal and re wiring as it was bodged up direct to a plug (still got a perfectly good motor switch on it), someone fitted it with a nice French made aluminium cased motor.
Side by side with an equivalent spec British made drill you can see where they are not as good, about 150lb lighter for a start, but they work well enough and if you don't pay much for one you can't lose on them, at least you can have a useable tool while you look for the drill you really want.

Even the Arc of Shame doesn't dim the value of this find.

Nice - I’ve been looking for a solid floor standing drill press for some time, but haven’t come anywhere close to a bargain like that. I’d also be interested in your feedback after some use.

I bought the same drill press, the Wilton 2550 and a vise, for $100 in 2020 from an ad on Craigslist just a couple miles from my house.

The only issue was the belt tension mechanism had become dis-engaged, so I re-engaged the mechanism, tightened the set screws, put new belts on it and it's been running perfectly ever since. And the bonus: no drill hits in the table!
