Too bad he wont be doing a load calc to know what his load will be
For one, NEC load calcs are complicated. Two, my load is whatever tool I’m using at the time plus some LED lights. I’m not over complicating this if I can help it. I’m not reducing my wire size below 4/0 so I don’t see the point. I have a shop to keep building.

What does a reduced neutral have to do with grd conductor size?

Grd size depends on ocp value, conductor material and upsizing for vd.
Yeah I had 4/0,4/0,2/0,4 MHF on the brain but used xhhw to give him the cart. Disregard my reason, but #4 is still correct.
