The EX08 will fire from 3-8k btu. The EX11 will fire from 5.5-11kbtu. Initially Rinnai did not have the 08 and found that the 11 was too large for th average bedroom sized space, meaning that the 5500 at 80% was a boatload of heat for those size spaces. I proposed a new small heater and Rinnai engineering were able to downfire the 11 to create the 08. Physically the same unit but the 08 has some vent extension limitations that do not apply to the 11. If it is a simple out the back vent then no issue but be clear on this. I would pick the 08 for your space. For straight pickup the 11 wins. For comfort in the space it is the 08.
Thanks Jackfre. EX08 it is then. Venting will be straight out the back. The wall is 2x6 framing with brick veneer so it looks like I'll need one of the extended vent kits.

My only gripe about the 8 & !1 is the venting. The larger units have a telescoping vent arm which greatly simplifies the install. The 8/11 due to the vertical config has a short vent arm and it can be a pita. You need a minimum clearance to the ground of 12”, higher for snow loads. I installed an 8 in my daughters small apt off her garage and build a 2x8 frame to raise the unit for the vent clearance. Rinnai offers vent extension pieces that run up the back of the unit. Use the shortest one and it simplifies the install. Sorry but I do not have that part # at hand. The vent supplied with the unit for the thru the wall portion will from 4.5-9.5” of wall thickness. If you need more you need the B vent they offer which will go from the 9.5-15.5”.

Hey Jack, this thread seems my best shot at an answer. Is there any kit or modification possible to a Rinnai 1001F to allow integration of a thermostat that can be connected to wifi? Thanks

Sorry, Wolfe, no. That 1001 hasn’t been made since ‘97 or 8, so 25 years old at least. They last! I’m installing and EX22 this week in our new place. This one will heat my gara-shop.
