I have a 3 1/2 HP 230v. 15 amp air compressor I need to wire in. I have a disconnect box that I had my old welder wired to that has #6 wire coming from a 50 amp circuit breaker in the main box. Can I use that circuit, or do I have to rewire with a smaller gauge and smaller breaker/ Any help would be great.

Keep the wire, change the breaker.

I just bought the same compressor today and have to figure out the wiring as well. Can I hardwire into an existing electrical box that has the right wire run?

How long is the run from breaker to compressor? I would run 12 ga. wire and 20 amp breaker as the compressor is only drawing 15 amps.

I would just leave the 6 ga. The only reason why we dont use wire that rated for too much higher than the desired current is cost of copper. 6 ga is overkill but perfectly fine.
