Wiring Air Compressor

I need some help wiring up a older compressor that I was given. I had to get a new motor because it did not have one and some of the wiring was undone when i got.


The motor got matches the specs from Quincy.


I have nema 14-30R outlet in my garage it is wired to a 40 amp breaker. And no the outlet that I want to use is not for the water heater its on a separate circuit.

The starter that come with the compressor has seen better days but should still work.



The pressure switch seems to have seen a few more better days


My question is what is the correct wiring for this compressor?
The diagram I found shows 3 wires for the motor mine has 4.



I want to make sure everything is in the right place before I start this thing up. The compressor will be about right next to the outlet. I bought a 4 prong dryer plug for the outlet, if that cant be used ill return it.

No 40a on a 30 outlet. You may do it if the wire is suffecient and hard wired. The wire on the comp is not correct if it is 4, it takes 2 conductors and a ground.

Off subject, but why is your discharge line going into the wall? Are you not using the receiver for air storage? Maybe just an optical illusion???


The line runs to a radiator that is mounted on the belt cage, so I had to take it off to take the belt cage off. The line is just turned into the air its not going any where right now.

Can you please explain more? I know the outlet is only designed for for 30 amps but the motor only needs 30. The circuit just has a 40 amp breaker on it. Also what wiring are you taking that needs 4. The new motor has 4 wires coming out, but it look like the old motor was only using 3.

If you pipe it it can use 10, if cable it needs 8 and it should be hard wired.

Sorry, I don't really understand what your saying?

The motor needs 3, the company supplied it may have used a cord for all/other models. The recept needs to be up rated, even a 50 is rated for 3.

What does the receptacle need to be up rated, the motor only calls for 30 amps and that is what it rated for?

The motor does not have a cord on it. There is a picture included of the motor. It just has 4 wires coming out.

I know you are trying to help, but I need you to give me more information.

Motors need to have horsepower rated plugs. It likely pulls well over 100A on start. There may be a couple possibilities on input wiring. I don't remember at the moment without pictures.

It's a 5 HP motor, so it needs #10 THHN (in conduit) or #8 NM-b (Romex) by code. Disconnect if not within 50' or visibility of the panel that feeds it. No plugs allowed unless they are pin and sleeve. Should be hard wired.

Motor circuits are different than resistive loads. For motor circuits you look up the nameplate HP and then look at the NEC tables for FLC and size wire to 125% of that. So a 5 HP single phase 230V motor requires wiring cable of 35A which is where the #10 / #8 come from. Breaker can be up to 70A to prevent nuisance trips as long as as the motor has thermal protection or a properly setup mag starter is present.

To make sure I understand, I need to remove the outlet and hard wire. the wire in wall should be good because the breaker is 40 amp. Its a brand new house and if its got a 40 amp breaker the wire will be able to handle 40 as well. Also because the house panel is on the other side of the wall I need a disconnect. I will add those to my list, but I think I am going to use the outlet for now to make sure that everything is functional then Ill add a new circuit with everything you talked about.

I know the outlet is not to code, but I want to make sure the model is functional.

Ask and you will receive.

The Jacket is cutoff so I can get to it. I also went and looked at the panel and its the same, I cant see the jacket.

As for the run length. Its no more then 10 ft. It goes out of the box over 3 studs then into the main house panel.
