Wiring my new compressor.

I’m in need of some assistance, I bought a new Champion VRV7F with a 7.5 hp motor. It’s 220v single phase. I haven’t had to deal with much a/c wiring before. I’m mostly wondering what to do with the white neutral wire. Does that just get hooked to the ground with the motor? I’ve attached an image of what I’m dealing with.

Pull it out or cap it. You don't need a neutral.

It doesn't look like you ran a equipment ground on your line side. Assuming this goes to a disconnect or J-box on the wall. You must replace that white with a green conductor of the correct size. Code only allows you to re identify a conductor #4 and larger. You are not allowed to use FMC for the equipment ground when it is installed for flexibility to prevent transmission of vibration. 348.60 of the NEC. Just add another lug or change the existing lug to a two barrel to land the equipment ground.

I can’t argue with the letter of the law, in this case the code book.

If it was my compressor you might find a green paint on a conductor that lands on the same buss bar as the green wires.

I will admit to knowing just enough to be dangerous.

Grounding is not done to prevent fires, that is the job of the circuit breaker/fuse. Grounding is done to not electrocute peoples.

You have to with most IEC overloads. Otherwise they will trip on phase loss

I only put wires in l1 and l2, l3 was installed when I got it.

what size breaker did you use?

how far away is the panel and is it within site of the compressor?

I put a 60 amp breaker in the main box and used 6 awg cable.

The panel is probably 3 feet away from the main breaker box, the compressor is about 2 feet away from the disconnect.

look at the overload relay block. it has phase loss protection. if only 2 CTs have current running through them, then it will instantly trip
