Wiring Question

Can Romex be used in open stud walls in my garage? I was told that the wire needs to shielded wire. 2012 IBC. I think plan review missed a few think and I don't want to fail a rough in innspection. thx matt

Local codes aside, yes as long as the wire is run along sides of studs and along running strips/boards where needed for protection. It is best to check with local inspectors.

As already said, local codes vary. Even if allowed, i would never run romex perpendicular to the studs, unless its up high. If its going to have the walls covered, that thats a different story

Shielded? If your talking about products like MC cable they are subject to the same requirements as NM cable that they be protected from physical damage.

When we wire our sheds with romex all runs are vertical on a stud. Nothing is horizontal. We also use metal boxes and metal covers on all the devices.

After talking to the inspectors this morning I was told that I can use MC cable in place of romex. I will double check thou. thx matt

Even with MC you cannot have any horizontal runs unless the walls are sheeted with something to protect the wire.

He's on the 2012 IBC. The rules for MC might be different than the NEC.

The whole idea is to protect the cable from physical damage. The NM Cable, colloquially called Romex, in my garage, where exposed, can only be reached by a person standing on a ladder.

MC basically has the same install requirements as NM. Can't be installed where subject to damage without having some form of protection, etc. See IRC Chapter 38 and NEC 330. The IRC for the most part just follows the NEC for electrical.
