Finding information about this company is a challenge but none the less it can be done. Some of the information (without seeing much historical archives will have lots of blanks so keep that in mind).

What I do know is the company of WM Johnson started in 1830 in Newark, N. J. Mr. Johnson was a prominent businessman in Newark by 1872. His company made hand tools and carpenters tools. Many of his tools were Forged steel and cast iron in nature and he made a lot of tools for the brick & masonry trades; his company was then sold in 1938 to the C.S. Osborne & Co. of Newark N.J.

I will have lots of links and some pictures of his tools if some very kind GJ member can work their magic and make the E-bay type links remain for all time I would be very appreciative Thanks in advance.

Here is my “flake of gold” leather punch from an El Cerrito estate sale yesterday. The lower punch is unmarked. The Johnson punch may need to go to a collector of early New Jersey made tools.

Belatedly. I realized that a have a rivet set made by Wm Johnson Tools. Here are the two together. As a coincidence, they are both size 7.

I thoroughly enjoy Woody's informative posts. I'm glad I can finally add to one.

Here is a Wm. Johnson tack puller I just found. Its overall length is 6.25 inches. It looks almost brand new. I wonder how long they were making these? To me, the ferrule and handle look quite recent. I originally thought they might have been a replacement. However, Worthpoint shows several of these tack pullers that look identical.

Found some WM Johnson dividers at the swap meet the other day...they were so rusted that I almost didn't fork out the buck, after a bath in the Evaporust they're pretty pitted but given that these tools are somewhat uncommon I thought I'd post them up.

I just found these beauties in the bottom of an old carpenter's box I bought. The level of attention to how they were made is impressive. Notable that they look similar to the Athol design, but clearly not manufactured there and they're quite a bit nicer than the Peck, Stow ones I've found. They do look very similar to a set of Keen Kutter dividers I have.

I found a very similar pair at yesterday’s estate sale. Made in NJ.IMG_6682.jpeg
