@phartman: No, this is just a hobby. Thanks for the kind words. I wish I was able to do instrument repair...one of these days I'd like to build a fiddle, but that seems a little foolish as I can't begin to play one...

You might want to check out a book called Clapton's Guitar. It is the story of Wayne Henderson from Southwest Virginia and how he came to build two guitars for ol' Slowhand himself. The book is a highly enjoyable read, but goes into quite a bit of technical detail about construction, and what makes a good guitar. As I understand it, a good guitar is as much about mechanics, engineering and the right materials as anything else.

You can get the book here:

A very enjoyable read for a woodworking garage rat like me as any others I've come across. I've given away dozens of copies. I think you'll like it.

Just coming across this thread. Wow! Lot's of wonderful woodworking crafstmanship here. I have a beat up 100 year old oak small box with some missing drawers I got as a project from a garage sale. What do you guys recommend for hardware sources to try to match existing hardware on an old box? And how would you go about trying to match old wood to new wood when I make some new drawers and fix it up? - Paul

You may have to replace all of the hardware as matching it can sometimes be very difficult. If it is a Gerstner chest, you be able to get it from them.

Also, Gerstner: http://gerstnerusa.com/opencart/index.php?route=product/category&path=61

As far as building drawers, any oak will work. If you want quartersawn oak (which is what most were made of) try Woodcraft stores - I have found it there on occasion. If you sand the existing drawers down and stain everything with a walnut stain, you will get a pretty good match. I made the bottom drawer for this chest and stained everything with a walnut stain (go easy on the stain).

This one looks metal, but it isn't. Just metal clad with very thin sheets. The skeleton is wood with a wooden removable tray.

Just picked this little teddy bear up today at the local antique mall. From a machinist who did watch repair as a hobby. Hand made box for spare watch parts. About 16" tall. Handcrafted drawers with dividers from galvanized tin.

Ken, thanks for the tips! The project chest I have is almost identical to your pictures, just a similar different brand! Mine is missing the bottom 3 drawers though and the front cover piece. Yours looks great! Mine was about $25 at a garage sale in its condition. I think a great deal for that and well worth restoring! - Paul

Paul:
Let me know if you need any pics of construction of drawers or front panel. I have made both. Your deal on that was great - I gave $65 for this one and had to drive to Dallas to buy it (as one of a group of chests). Here is a front view that may help you with the proportions of the various parts of the front panel, if you can scale it. I can get actual measurements if you need them. (This chest was a gift for a friend so I wouldn't have instant access, but could get dims if needed).

Here is a tool box I put together, nothing fancy but I put tools in and its a box so I think it qualifies. It also makes a great place for my sand blasting cabinet.

Picked up this one today at a junk shop. A tradesman's carry case. Plywood with galvanized edging and reinforced corners. Homemade with a leather handle. There was a newspaper lining the bottom from Richmond, VA October, 1964. Inside was an ad for Richmond Ford, saying it was the exclusive dealer for the Shelby Cobra.

If we had only known....

Note how carefully the piece was assembled. All the screw slots line up with each other.

Got this off E bay.
I had to make the drawer 1st. one up from the bottom.
Had to clean up the box and hardware, and gave it all a light coat of shellac.

Shown as I brought it, with the new drawer, and finished.
