Woodworking sub-forum?

A suggestion for a wood working sub forum was brought up in the free parking section today.
I think it would be a great addition to the site and would be a nice balance to the metal-heavy fabrication section.

I would agree with that. I do alot of woodworking yet little metal working. Might be a nice addition.

alot of the tools cross over.... ok well some. but it would be a great addition. lots of tools, expensive, more opinions than brains... itd fit in great with gj.

same here. Plus, I'm sorta into both! I do simple car maintenance and a few renovation related tasks in my garage. I've gotten more serious on the car front recently with help from the GJ. A subforum as you propose would help on the other front.

The woodworking sub forum would have a yes vote for me. I have a wood shop in both my garage and my shed. I am trying to move it all to the shed.
Lately there have been some good wood shops shown on Garage Gallery.

Total new guy here, but I also vote yes. Woodworking one of my biggest garage hobbies. :)

Count me in, I do a lot of hobby wood working and it would be a natural addition. In fact I am surprised that there is not a woodworking section already.

I will go against the "grain" and say it's not needed. I have a big woodshop with all the pro tools and build quite a bit of furniture. there are already several good and popular woodworking sites out there, and with all the newbies joining just to ask "what kind of garage door for my mcmansion" and "what kind of wheelbarrow shoud I get", it is just going to deter from the real garage/shop atmosphere. just my opinion but really not looking forward to more debates on the sawstop, Delta quality from China, Grizzly is worse than HF, etc.

by the way, what kind of chisels should I get? should I get a benchtop lathe or should I get a full sized one to turn pens?

An excellent idea. I joined GJ in order to get ideas for the woodworking shop that I will be putting up in the back yard. I have been afraid to even mention hardwood floor in the garage build section.

A woodworking section would be a great addition, it would be cool to see some cross over between the wood and metal work. There is some potential to see some great projects that only exist on the deepest darkest parts of the internet.

Even though this site is not democracy, I vote for a woodshop subforum also

But all of them need another forum to ask why their 2x6 wood dining room table top is splitting!! :)

I think there are some great woodworking forums out there, I tend to hang out there. I like all of the other stuff I get on GJ...

I wouldn't expect this to replace lumberjocks or sawmill creek, but it would collect the discussion/examples/etc. done by woodworkers at GJ in one place. Technically (!) this is really "Fabrication and Techniques".....but that subforum has evolved to be all metal.

Since I am more in to woodworking at the moment I vote yes as well. As mentioned before it all has to do with working in the garage or shop. It just makes a large mess to clean up!

I am with you on this topic. I just don't see the need to compete with other forums on too many subjects. When people ask about auto body, tractors, etc. I usually add a link to send them where they can get the best answers, resources, parts, and equipment. So many other forums can do so much better for most subjects not covered here that it seems a waste of resources to do not nearly as well.

I belong to some more specialized forums some of my work crosses into metal and woodworking and it fits in neither, a more inclusive forum would help.

Yes being that this is a higher traffic forum with a less focused population there will be the arguments over tools and newbie questions, but is that not the point? I see enough of that on my cnc forum arguing over feed rates and cutter profiles. Opinions happen.

If I can share a bit of knowledge or learn from someone its good.

Good idea. The common homeowner DIY garage is far more likely to have a table saw, miter saw and drill press before a welder, lathe or mill.

Of all the sub-forums on GJ, there are generally other forums out there that cover the same topics, some of them going into more detail.

Got a question ? There are also direct specific forums to answer those questions too.


So what does GJ provide ? It gives the everyday guy, the professional and the DIYer a place to cover it all, and I mean all. How many times have you seen a question go unanswered ? Not very many, the guys/girls here have a vast amount of knowledge and willing to share that wide array of brain cells with people they have never met.

Personally, I believe including a woodworking sub-forum on GJ would greatly enhance and improve the amount of overflowing knowledge this place already has to offer.

Woodworking subforum, count me in.
