A little sneak peek for those who care... I'm hoping to have the new Garage Journal up by the end of January.

I hope you found some better software. Requiring pictures to be hosted elsewhere is not cool, especially since most hosting companies are offering unlimited storage now and storage is dirt cheap these days. You can buy 1TB for about $100 today.

I always have trouble adjusting to new forum formats at first. I always get past it too and usually find them to be even better than before, which I'm sure this will be. My thanks too for making this a great place to learn and share information. Happy New Year.

Not following you... We host images and have for years.

In that case I don't understand how to do it. I read several posts before I started including pictures and they all referred to other hosting sites, for large pictures.

I also looked on this site for help in posting pictures and didn't find any.

Perhaps you can guide me. It's not obvious to me, and I have many years of experience developing web sites.

Clever when you click the Post Reply button to reply to a post oooooooooooor when you start a new thread once you finish typing your post scroll down the page and you will see a button marked manage attatchments click on it and it will let you browse your pictures on your computer . Pic the pics you want then click upload once it is done uploading you can close the pop up window and scroll further down the main page where you wrote your post and there will be a second post button below the attatchments window.

Indeed, this site is rather stingy with space for pics. JPGS, which is the most common type have to be reduced to less than 79K to upload them to the site. I usually set the pic size to 800x600 and then I have to use the extreme file compression, and sometimes I have to load the pic in a second program that will compress it some more.

Otherwise, simply use the "Go Advanced" and then "manage attachments" and select and upload your files.

I take all pictures that I plan on posting on the web on the lowest setting on my digital camera the VGA setting in my case believe it or not anymore than 2 or 3 megapixels is a waste of time if you are posting them to the web as 98% of the systems out there wont show any more resolution than that anyways . Heres an example.

IMO that's a lame approach. If I were running a project to develop the software (and I have done it dozens of times), I would give an F to that approach and make the developers make it easier and more obvious. Plus, you can only do small pictures that way, which are virtually worthless to me. I can't make out any details even with my glasses and a magnifying glass (all the picturs I have posted have been much larger). To me it's another classic case of clueless software designers. I should stop before this becomes more of a rant.

Edit: Just to be clear -- I'm criticizing the software designers, not this forum. I've been fighting this fight for more than 35 years.

Charles, I agree. I saw your post after I posted my rant. The software should be designed for a mixed demographic of good and bad eyes. That's all I will say.

Ron that is a big pcture but Honestly on my laptop I have to scan side to side to see all of it . I havent gone in the house and looked on my 26" monitor in the house but then again I like it beter out here in the garage :D. With the right program you could probably get even that pictue low enough in KB's to fly here by compressing the file . I will also add that although I have a 20.0 cable connection and have no problems with a picture that size being inbeded the dialup guys just went to go make a sandwich and walk the dog while it opened :D.

Rick,

I appreciate your perspective, but I don't believe in designing for the least common denominator. The guys who are using dialup should wake up and smell the broadband. Seriously, you have to pay to play. You can get satellite broadband even in rural areas. Do you know how many dialup users you have?

IMO the larger pictures are invaluable in providing the detail necessary to support the accompanying text. Often I have found that the small pictures don't help at all in my understanding of the post. Granted, this is an opinion of a baby boomer, but I predict there are many others with better eyesight who agree.

Perhaps you don't want to face the pain of switching to different software. If you like, I will help you do it, thereby providing a better user experience IMO.

Or maybe your software vendor can be persuaded to help.

Edit: It would help if you would identify any issues preventing you from improving the user experience. Is it money or conversion or time or what?

BTW, that image doesn't come close to filling the screen on my laptop -- an HP DV8000 with a 17" screen -- a screen size that is common today on desktops if not laptops.

Ron I have no software issues like I said I can see yor pic and it loads fast for me with a 20.0 connection . I agree I enjoy the larger pictures but I also know several peaple who have no other decent option other than dialup due to location One of them Lives in Main and just managed to get a Darn Slow Line :D. after years of being stuck with dialup and She is actually one of the mods on another forum I belong to as wellas being an IT guru . I have to put the readers on from time to time to make out the fine details myself .

We aren't rebranding the site... Just redesigning it... and adding more features.

Rcleaver, we use the standard vbulletin image hosting functionality. If you've been developing sites, I'm really surprised you haven't used it before. PM me, I'll walk you through it...

One of the great new features of the coming upgrade is that image size restrictions will be gone completely.

So do I understand correctly that you are not interested in improving the user experience? That's not an implied criticism. It's obviously your call, perhaps influenced by factors that you don't want to reveal.

Ron, I think you are confused... Rick doesn't run this site. I do. He is just trying to give you an opinion.

Of course we care about usability. In fact, we are busting our asses to improve upon it right now. :)

Ryan,

Please call me Ron. I'm not an adversary. I'm just looking for ways to make this experience better. You guys have a site good enough to keep me coming back, notwithstanding any implications to the contrary.

vbulletin is a marginal player. I'm not all that familiar with it. There are lots of players with better functionality. If image size restrictions are gone, then I'm probably happy, for now anyway. :bounce:

Ummm... VB is the largest forum platform in the world.

What's with the pissy attitude man? If you aren't happy with the site, I'd be happy to give you your money back. :)

Sorry, but I haven't encountered VB before. Can you provide a reference to support your claim that VB is the largest platform in the world. Seriously, I'd like to know.

As I said, I'm not trying to be pissy. Did you read my previous (edited) post?

Sure, check out Google Trends. As a developer, I assume you have an account? Vbulletin supports almost twice as many end clients (and therefore users) as the second highest rated package (phpBB). In my opinion, the only other package that offers a better user experience is the small AJAX based Vanilla. I love Vanilla... Unfortunately, however, it's not capable of handling the kind of traffic load we have.

In any case, we've had a lot of success with Vbulletin. They've done a great job with support and they are constantly making improvements. We hack ours quite a bit, but that also says a lot about flexibility.

OK. Now I understand. I was thinking phpBB was the largest, but it's only the largest among open source solutions (so they say).

Perhaps it was just a manifestation of my belief in open source. I'm on a crusade to rely on open source for everything.

Have you used phpBB? From a usability standpoint, it's... uhh... lacking. And they use the same attachment code (pretty much) as VB.

In any case, I think we are getting a bit off topic... and more than likely boring the masses. :)

Back to garages... Just wanted to let you fellas know that we are working hard to improve the joint. I think ya'll are gonna like the new design and functionality.

One last comment and then it's back to garages. The usability is a matter of opinion and familiarity with the code. My job is not so much a developer these days as it is the one who is responsible for making the client happy. So far my clients have been happy with phpBB. They are also happy with .NET instead of J2EE. Strictly subjective. I'd like to be technology agnostic, but in the final analysis the only thing I care about is making the client happy. If a cient says use VB or J2EE, that's fine with me. I just try to lay out the pros and cons. My clients are most often federal government CIOs.

That's for sure...but maybe us 'masses' are learning something!

From a layman's POV, I have no problem using photobucket to upload my pics. As far as having to scroll to see the pic posted by Ron, I'm on a 17" laptop and I can see the entire photo. That's the size I like and I see 90% of posters use that size. It's the rare (and generally newer) user that uses the GJ attachment format.

Ryan - thanks for all the work you are doing - it's an AWESOME site and the only one that keeps me back near daily. Happy NewYear.

FWIW, I don't think you're ever going to get the majority of people to use the attachment function. It's just too clunky. I would really like to see forced thumbnailing of all images, so that screen formatting doesn't get screwed up and so threads stay at reasonable physical length. It's particularly irritating when someone quotes a lengthy picture post.

I'd tend to agree that file size is not the issue it once was, although there are still some slow connections out there.

Without nerds you wouldn't have the forum. Or a computer. Now where did I put my pocket protector :headscrat ?

E-tec I have been around here for a while but I also belong to another Shop forum and the rule there is attatch pics not imbed as we have quite a few members over there who are on dialup and it makes it hard on them by slowing things down quite a bit . I also agree that by attatching the pics we dont end up with multi quotes that take a full page simply due to every quote having every pic from the original post in them. I will add once you are used to attatching pics its really not that big of a deal to do it .

So Rick, will GJ be attaching pics the same way they are done at the other site after Ryan makes his changes? :headscrat I must admit, the way everyone carries on about pics at the other site I would never dream of trying to throw a pic up for fear of doing the wrong thing and just being dogpiled! It sounded like a rather daunting task for a knuckle dragger like me! :lol_hitti

LOL Buck its not that hard over there just use the manage attatchments button when posting upload your pics and post I guess I have been doing it for so long now its just second nature to me I do prefer it that way . The other major reason I like that system and the other Major reason they do it that way is you can go almost back to the first days of that site and look at pictures in posts on the other hand linking from Photo hosting sites just doesnt work peaple move their pics on those sites or quit using them and **** a thread with no pics in it which to me is useless 80% of the threads over here and over there are worthless without pics :D so no pics pretty much worthless thread . I dont think a thread about your new floor or mac daddy SNAP ON ratchet really works without the pictures .

I think what Ron might be asking is if something like PhotoPost will added. This allows members to download pictures to this sites own Photo Gallery without the need for off site photo hosting, such as photo bucket, fotki or whatever you choose to use. There is a fee involved, as I recall, but I think it's fairly cheap. The advantage is that it's easy to use and is very compatible with the Vbulletin, PHPbb and several other forum formats.

I think PhotoPost is a Vbulletin product.

We use it on www.metalmeet.com and it works very well

Yes, users will have their OWN photo galleries... No sweat...

The image management with the upgrade will be very similar to our current system, but the image size limit will be pretty much non-existant.
