@speed bump - I was thrown by your description of using fine thread wood screws. In particle board? I was thinking something like Spax.

Just curious.
Not to beat this point to death but I don't recall saying fine thread. I did mention pocket screws that I use course thread screws. Those screws specifically designed for this board sounds like a good idea.

Pocket screws come in both fine and coarse thread

The screws I use are basically a pocket screw. I like the fine thread because it seems to tear up the particle board less. If you go in the screw aisle I would just look at what they have for cabinet screws and buy the finer thread in whatever brand you like. When I was younger and poorer I built enough with sheet rock screws to know it will work but it doesn't turn out as nice.

Do you rabbit for glue surface area or to mill away the melamine for the glue? Both?

Neither, I did it so everything locked together. The glue makes it permanent but if I did my part you can assemble the shelves I made without any fasteners and they will stand up. For stuff I have to assemble in place it makes it easy.
