Hey lads,
Firstly this is a great site, love it always go onto it to have a quick look but end up loosing hours flicking through posts on it. ive being on the site a good while but dont think i posted anything before, usually just read.
Anyway couldnt take looking at all ye're pads anymore so ive started my garage. its roughly 61' x 32', know its an odd size but i made it to get the best value out of the steel i had.
I intend to do mainly restoration and rally prep in it so mainly sheet metal work and fabrication.
Hope these pics come out as never put up pics before. :headscrat

Hey it worked :bounce:
so i used 8 inch channel for the main structure, 17' 6" rafters and 12' 6" uprights(as you can see i had 30' channel so made shed to suit), 15 deg pitch.
poured 3' foundation all around, with steel and bolted frame to it. actually i bolted the base plates to the ground first then stood up the legs with the help of my thrusty hiab and then welded them in position when everything was plumb.

some snow pics for everyone :) this is how the garage stands at the min, no work has being done in over a week as temps are too low so waiting for weather to warm up a bit to finish blocking then can finish the roof.

Just assumed you would use metal on the walls. So I was surprised to see the block work. With the steel framework and block walls it should last forever. Nice work.

Anto,
Do you have slaves to help? Quite impressive for one man. Your building methods seem so different from the states, it reminds me of my house built in 1903 with the double brick walls. Will you fill the void with insulation, or will the air gap be sufficient?
I see some sort of heater, what is this?

Willysrule...... yea you probably did drive through it if you were heading to carlow from dublin or anywhere in the northern half of country, laois is right in the middle.

Bib Overalls... thanks for reply, yea hopefully it will be a lifetime job. all the steel is galvanised aswell so should help things and cavity walls are insulated also.

Quititman..... void is partially filled with insulation, its double foil backed insulation stuck to inside leaf of blocks. 4" concrete block on inside, 4" cavity with 80mm insulation stuck to inside leaf and then 4" concrete block on outside leaf aswell tied together with stainless wall ties. pretty standard method of building houses in ireland(and in my opinion the best method)
heres typical drawing......

Also worth taking note of damp proof membrane on top of footings(in this pic third row of bricks and around windows) to stop rising damp and to keep inner leaf dry.

And a progress report on the garage, got my lights up in 2 out of the 3 bays. 12 5 foot t8 doubles i think is what ye would call them with prolux bulbs. didnt put up any lights in third bay as i intend to try set up a spray booth and prep room in it and loft it for a milling machine/lathe and storage area(long term)
also got to test the lift with my da's van. :bounce:

installed my two post lift aswell with some help form a mate and da, never installed one of these before so was a learning experience but it turned out well.
had to use my own van to test it dough so it was a kind of fingers and toes crossed moment!!!! luckily it was fine and am actually suprised how strong it was. (2 post lift was a chinese lift in comparassion to the rotary scissors lift)

Anto,
Very nice result on your finished garage. Congrats. No those cars didn't make it to the states, but I really like the clean purposeful build of your car. Looks like it would be a blast to rally.

If you search on you tube there are some videos of Ken Block driving one of those Escorts on a gravel stage. He loved it so much he bought one and had it shipped back to the states. OP - Great car and amazing workshop :) A real achievement!

Great job. I really like the way houses ( shops) are built in Ireland. I've been in the building trades for most of my life so I'm always interested in different techniques. Ireland is my favorite country next to the U.S. One thing that I really noticed was, there are few wooden buildings in Ireland and all the new house construction I saw had slate roofs and fireplaces. Love the smell of turf burning, So much so that I bought about 150 bricks of it from a guy who imports it not far from me. Burned with wood it pretty much lasted the winter burning only a brick or two at a time.Love that smell, it reminds me of Ireland.

Hi Jack, its gas the way people love the way things are done everywhere else. i would have given anything to have built an american style timber barn with a gambrel style roof. i love yere old barns but you are not allowed build gambrel style roofs in ireland, cant get planning for them.
I actually burn a lot of turf dough :bounce: must get up a few pics for you, will be at it next month now when weather gets better. its gas we take it for granted, could be acres of turf cut where we are. hard to beat it in the winter dough!!

Boosted1, thanks for the reply. dont actually compete in this one as ive spent too much time on body of it. it does get driven hard dough and have done coarse car for a few rallys with it.

Great shop! I also love to see how things are built over there compared to N.America. I would imagine brick construction would perform better with all the rain over there. Maybe less moisture and rot problems. Anyways, looks awesome!
