Hi all! Its been 5 years in the making (probably more like 20), but finally got started on my workshop! I'll post this in parts as best I can to give you all an idea of my experience so far. My writing is not as colorful as some I've seen on here. I'm sure, as most of you are, the experience of building a shop could consume hundreds of pages. I'll try to keep it from becoming a novel though :)

The Backstory

About 5 years ago, I decided that my 2 car garage just wasn't going to be big enough for my hobbies. At that time, the wife and I were in the process of preparing to send our daughter off to college so funds for a workshop were far from my wife's mind. I on the other hand was having daily dreams of the perfect workshop to house my woodworking tools, stereo, TVs, friends, you name it. I just couldn't shake the need, it was like a drug. I had to have a dedicated and detached workshop!

Enter Google Sketchup:

What a great tool first off. If you are planning, building, or simply dreaming of a new garage/workshop, this is without a doubt the first stop. Without this little free tool, I honestly don't think I'd be where I am right now. It took my vision from "would be nice" to "Honey what do you think of this" to "I'm doing this for sure!". I began drawing my vision about 4 years ago using this little nugget. I'd download the latest version as soon as it was available, just to see what was new. I learned so much during the first year of its use. My first drawings were not very good at first, but I was able to see how much room I really needed and it really helped visualize my goals for a build. By the end of my first year of use, I was drawing buildings and designs that any architect would be proud of ;-)

4 years ago, I began finalizing my workshop build. I had a complete Google sketchup drawing, went to my HOA, got approval and began getting bids to complete my 24' X 36' castle in the back yard! It was actually going to happen since my daughter had obtained a scholarship and all of her school was going to be paid for! This is where the dream took that “Turn”. You know the one. The one where something more important comes up and all that money you had thought you’d spend on you garage is spent somewhere else? Or, that one where you find out that your going to pay three times more for something than you thought. Or in my case both :-(

Some photos in the old workshop of projects completed in the last few years will be posted as soon as I can figure out how ;-)

The Roadblocks

On the from of our house was a small stoop. This stoop was made of brick and concrete. It was fairly tall though due to the steep grade in from of our house. It had some issues over the years with failed drainage and a failed fix from the previous owner. One day I walked out to the from of the house to find my wife with a hammer and a chisel prying a brick off. Once you pull off one brick...

5c44e096f6f45bbc5765089d4d368e57.jpg

That small brick being pulled off the from porch turned into a monumental DIY project

Obviously both funding and time were in short supply during and after this project. It ended up being a 4 month project and after many arguments and damn near a divorce, we finally finished it. It was beautiful and a definite improvement to the house, but still no workshop a year later. [emoji22]

Finally started making new plans for that workshop but yet another snag...

To be continued...

Your wood skills are awesome.

Totally agree with sketchup. It's honestly the greatest for things like this.

Thanks Steve! Yea Sketchup has kept me from making a lot of mistakes. I'll post some more project pictures later.

So after the big porch project, I set out to begin my workshop yet again. The first guy that bid on my shop took one look at my lot and said no thanks, too much dirt to move. The second said the retaining wall alone would cost me $50,000. The third and final contractor role me it would be impossible as blasting would be involved.

0ce7777ab491e849503c415bfbddd35f.jpg

After hearing all of these opinions and doing a little more research I found out that my lot had to be blasted in order to level the location where the house was built. I was devastated! My shop wasn't going to happen yet again.

Another year went by, still no workshop

Things settled down again, I was facing the fact that a workshop just wasn't in the cards for me. Then I thought of the only possible solution... it was time to move.

My wife and I were the only ones living there, my daughter had gone off to college and 4 bedrooms and 4000sq ft of living space was just too much. I think there were rooms that I hadn't been in in more than 6 months. I began looking at land, but my wife didn't think it would be a good investment. Then I said we'll what if we found a property on the lake? Her interest was piqued! And so began our quest to find a lake house. Of course it had to have enough room to build a workshop too!!!

After a couple of months searching we decided on a 1 acre lake lot with a perfect spot for a workshop! So off we went to live the lake life!

37f5627e64e98d00d912808c544eeb32.jpg

Bought a boat, got a smaller house!

472c777b4c156a2084511a170aff1c2a.jpg

We've lived here for a year and with everything going on like tubing, boating, and my new 2nd favorite thing, fishing, it was time to get back to the real reason we moved here. That workshop!

Great lead in so far. If your previous porch re-imagine is any example, this will likely turn into to an epic thread.

Glad you're posting and looking forward to your progress.

Been working on drainage and damp proofing.

No groundwater was visible during excavation and it's been extremely wet lately but better safe than sorry

I'm coming along for the ride on this one, I'm sure it will balloon into a massive re-do !

Man you're scaring me! Hopefully by "re-do" you're not seeing something I'm doing wrong so far are you?

Anyone know of a good resource for roof trusses in North Georgia? Also wonder about installation? Do most attempt installation or sub it out?

Also wanted to add I've called a couple of places and they never called back. Kinda pisses me off how some business never return calls. I'm sure others have had the same experience when trying to be your own GC.

Bead board, 1x4s, and some molding along the sides of the 1x4. Here is a better picture of it. It's extremely simple once you see them install it.

Columns are just more 1x2s and 1x4s with some small trim molding and crown around the top.

Wish I had a better picture but hard to get one now.

Wood for framing is in, but ran into a slight snag. HD shipped regular OSB. After about an hour of runaround I was able to get them to come back out and swap my stack for the Zip System sheathing. They brought it out on a truck and hand loaded and unloaded. Anyhow, it's all here.

Also big thanks to Samh for the recommendation of Heritage Truss in Canton GA. Someone actually answered the phone, took my plans via email, and gave me a quote in about 2 hours, so found my truss system and it was cheaper than I thought.

I haven't logged onto this site in quite some time, glad I did. I too have been putting off building my ultimate workshop. I'm happy to see you are, it gives back the motivation I lost. I'll be following your posts :)

Thanks kentguy, sometimes life gets in the way. In fact it's pretty likely that it will for me also before I finish my shop, but I'll keep plugging away! I hope to see your thread on here soon!

Coming along nicely. The more pics the better (for us).
I spent a few days on Lanier a few years ago. Lake seems big enough that it should stay interesting. On a lake that is only 5 min to either end, not sure I would want to live on it. That said I'm jealous, sweet location and 2k shop in progress. Nice!

Awesome. Glad to hear it. My experience with them has always been great.

In need of some quick advice. The contractor that poured my slab put these straps in:

Just looking at them and wondering how in the world I'll be able to use them makes my head hurt. How will I ever get the walls down right and shimmed with nothing to really anchor them down. I'm scared to death to drill for real anchors that close to the slab corners. Any ideas? Should I just use these and assume they'll be ok? Or should I not be worried about chipping off the slab with an impact drill and use threaded rod?

Coming along nicely. The more pics the better (for us).

I spent a few days on Lanier a few years ago. Lake seems big enough that it should stay interesting. On a lake that is only 5 min to either end, not sure I would want to live on it. That said I'm jealous, sweet location and 2k shop in progress. Nice!

Thanks! Yes Lanier is pretty big. Couple of pics while I was out fishing:

Looks great, but I'm a little disappointed I was hoping we would get to see some homemade blasting at the old place. LOL

Been a couple of weeks but things are progressing. Trying to frame up 2x6x12' walls as a one man show is rough [emoji28]

Got all the basic lumber for the walls, need a few 2x4s for bracing though

A few sections ready to stand up. Used some straps to straighten out some warped ones

I was thinking of renting one of these for the day once I get the larger walls ready to stand up. Anyone used one of these to stand up walls when working alone?

Anyone used one to install trusses?

When i set the trusses on my last shop, i called a crane truck guy. He brought out a large flat bed with a boom. We set my 14" steel beam and then we set all my attic storage trusses in about an hour and a half total. It cost me like $200. I suggest you get 2 helpers to scab on 2x4s as you get the trusses set and plumb.

Ask around at the truss mfg or where you get structural steel beams from.

I hate that I don't live near you. I would love to help out and get some experience.

You are definitely going to need help raising the walls and installing trusses.

Well after work tonight I decided to go for it and raise a section. My BIL just happened to be there and I had him help me out. I was totally unprepared and he had to hold the wall up while I cut some bracing and tried to get those damn hurricane straps through my predrilled holes. Hope it doesn't blow over tonight.

I'll precut my bracing and hopefully the rest go smoother.

More progress but not much. Just a one man show for now with occasional help raising a wall here and there

I've been racking my brain trying to figure out a way to raise these sections alone. For now I'm just going to finish all sections on the slab and rent a forklift at some point to install them. Even with help they are a real bear and dangerous to stand up. Someone recommended I just toenail the studs to the sill plates, but that doesn't sound like code or very secure. I'll just measure very carefully and stand them all at once. I think we should start a not-for-profit and call it "Habitats for Man's Sanity" and we all travel around building workshops for free!
