That was a lot of fun to watch! I really like his vise manufacturer floor displays...very impressive. I'm very curious of what he's holding back for future viewing, maybe a super old and rare vise?

Thanks for sharing! I'm going to have to watch the video again.

I just finished watching it myself. You’re right in that it will need another viewing or 2 for me to absorb everything in his collection. He showed his Bugatti vise near the beginning so it can’t be that. I suppose that finding a Bugatti at a somewhat affordable price is on all of our dream lists.

I meant to post this here when it came out, and wondered what the reactions would be (and whether the guy was on GJ)

So how did he amass such a collection? Did he inherit it and then build upon it? He doesn't look all that old. It must be an interesting story.

On his Youtube site he gives a very good explanation of how he can afford his hobby. It's listed under his financial advise. He makes a lot of sense.

Hmmm, perhaps there's more on the wewbsite, but not much of an explanation here. All I heard in the posted clip was get a job, go to work and spend all your spare money on vises. Did I miss something? Not a knock, I've got the collector bug too (just not vises) and yes I've spent thousands too.

I’ve been in the vise game and posting regularly here for almost 10 years. I’ve never seen a clue pointing toward his being active on GJ.
Facebook definitely...GJ probably not.

I ended up with my nearly 100 bench vises the same way. Searching, talking to people, making trades, spending money. I didn‘t inherit a single one. A few came to me free as gifts, one I found in a dumpster, sometimes I traded a nice one for 2-3 projects, sometimes I traded 3 rougher ones for a beauty.
Some I spent hours restoring, others I simply cleaned, oiled, and put up on a shelf.

There are a few GJ members with 100+ vise collections. I know that is the way they got to where they are today with that same approach. Keep your eyes open, develop contacts, be ready to spend money.

I have sold vises to guys who wanted users at prices they were happy with. There is a lot of old iron still out there in general circulation. Sure, the average newbie probably won’t find a Reed or Wilton C series for $50-100 like you could 5-10 years ago but that doesn’t mean ALL of the decent user vises have been swallowed up and hidden away in private collections.

I take it that he's tired of answering the question about where he got all of his money, and he has a way of explaining it that appeals to me. I hope most people will understand that there is some humor to his video.

Finding the vises is one thing. But to find the advertising for them has got to be a whole different level of difficulty. That stuff isn't just sitting around like old gas station and service station memorabilia. I can't say I've ever seen any before this video.

That's an impressive collection, to be sure. Definitely a ton of work, time and $$$ went into that. Hats off to him, and it's nice that he shared it an overview with the rest of us enthusiasts.

I will say that his collection seems to have long ago outgrown the space which, at least to me, suggests something about how the hobby fits into his overall budget. Not trying to throw shade, I have respect for the collection and the knowledge and passion that built it. That said, it just feels grossly out of proportion with the rest of the house, and by extension probably the budget. To each his own, and I'm glad he can afford it all, but probably the last person I'd seek financial advice from.
