so i decided to finally get myself down to the sears outlet and find several boxes available at discount prices.

one in particular is a 12 drawer 40" orange metallic roll away ball bearing chest seen below. it's an open box buy in fairly good condition. the main problem i found was the large drawer on the right side had one of the ball bearing slides broken apart. i talked to the manager about it and he said i could have it for $210, possibly less than $200.

would you buy it?

i've always been disappointed in the quality of craftsman boxes compared to some you'll find at home depot, lowes, or even hf. they just seem sub par. for less than $200 who can pass it up? another downfall is that it's a discontinued model so i'd be ever so lucky to find the top chest or side cabinet to this.

thoughts, comments?

a cheap box will remind you of your mistake everytime you use it if it turns out to be a disappointment...........course if it meets or exceedes your expectations, you may find yourself getting a little giddy everytime you use it.........i too have found craftsman lacking for the price they want but at this price , may be too good to pass up...........good luck on your decision.......

Tell them you priced a replacement ball bearing slide and you'll give them $180. You won't feel so bad about the box or the color for that good a price.

yea the manager i talked to threw $190 at me to entice me to buy it. i may ask for $180 or $185 and buy it.

as far as i know they're waterloo boxes so getting a replacement ball bearing guide won't be too hard.

i honestly don't think at anything under $200 i would be disappointed. especially when the next closest box at that size new is the hf box that's an import. to get that under $300 i have to buy by the 25th and have a coupon. the reason i haven't gotten the hf box yet is i'd like us made.

Not a bad deal. They are pretty decent boxes for work around the garage. The HF box is good but if you can get something similar that fits your needs for $100 less, why not? Getting a matching top box at discount is going to be a PITA but if its gonna hide out in your garage I wouldn't care.

Cant go wrong for 200 bucks. The color is also special. Its a great starter box and you will get most or all back if you decide to sell it later.

i've got a small cheap task force box that barely stands over 48" tall. i believe the roll chest is 16" depth total so the drawers aren't worth ****. i've got numerous tools all over because the one i have can't hold anything.

i just found out my inlaws were going to get me a $100 gift card to sears. so that would mean only 80-90 out of pocket depending on how low i can talk the manager. i'm thinking i should go for it.

Is it the griplatch or the non-griplatch version? If it is griplatch I'd buy it for the price you were offered. I have a similar box (one or two more drawers than that one) that is griplatch that I paid twice that and think was a good value. Mine was bought new around Christmas, in the box for $425.

I would buy it. Of course my favorite color is orange so I like the look of it a lot. $180 would be worth it to me, especially that size box. With a nice piece of butcher block you would have a great work station.

it's non grip latch w/ detents. the manager said they had the top also in the same color but it sold the other week. all they have now is red and green 40" tops. both those had bottoms that just sold too. ***** i just missed out.

there's numerous other pieces there. they have the 80th anniv 26" ball bearing gray/black combo there. bottom, intermediate, and top box for more than this 40" by a 100+.

IMO its because Craftsman makes **** tool boxes (outside of the"pro" line, which are pretty good). Sheetmetal is thin, drawers are flimsy, locks are cheap, etc.. Next time your down looking at them pull out the bottom drawer and stand in it.

I would buy a better quality used box for that. The Craftsman stuff I have seen is pretty junky IMHO. But if you need to have new stuff I think the price is very fair for Craftsman or any new box. But I would never buy it when one can get a deal like my $380 used snap-on taco cart I purchased a few months back. That is a 500% better value in my mind.....it is about twice the size. Deals like that some up pretty often. I like Craftsman tools but their boxes are pretty craptastic.

I would be on top of that in a heartbeat:

1. The color is rare and man it'll be nice to have a box that stands out rather than the typical red and black.
2. The price is great for that box. If it was the typical price I wouldnt though but for the price its a great deal.
3. Flimsy or not what do you have to lose for $200? If anything flip on craigslist for $300 or so.

Lots of haters here. I got a 40" Craftsman top/bottom with ball bearing slides and griplatch for x-mas.

Truthfully......I don't see the hate. Its not a truck brand, and that's ok. I don't need a $10K box made from 1/4" diamondplate.

It holds all my tools nicely (thats what a toolbox does, right?) The drawers are pretty effortless.
Stand in the bottom drawer? Lets be real, are you ever going to put 200+lb in your bottom (or any) drawer? Where is the realistic stopping point?

Nice box, great deal, buy it. For those who say wait to buy the perfect box that is equal to being a young kid waiting for the perfect top model to drop down from heaven and offer to change your status from being a virgin to being a non-virgin and then by the time you are 65 you wonder why you can't sit because of your 2' diameter blue balls.

For that price it will always be worth it just from a space utlization/storage capacity standpoint alone.

well i broke down and bought the box. i got it for $210, taxes included, out the door. all i have to do to make it right is buy one ball bearing slide. it didn't come with a warranty but i'm going to try to get them to replace it anyway. pics to come later.

I would say it was a great purchase for that box. I have two C-man boxes (one cheap top/bottom, and one mid-grade top/middle/bottom with ball bearing slides). I also have two MAC boxes (one top/bottom, one Macsimizer Class III workstation). The Macsimizer is in a class of it's own, but my mid-grade C-man box compares pretty well with the other MAC.

Of course, I don't plan on standing on the drawer ever. Nor will I set an engine block on an open drawer. I tend to use my toolboxes as toolboxes, and fully expect all of them to last a lifetime with NORMAL use.

Hope you find a nice matching top box for it someday!

i doubt i will find a top for it but if i do, i'll jump on it. i may just get a black side box for it. i figure the black won't clash as much with it as any other color. i almost thought about buying this 26x18 top box in silver to put on top. i didn't because i'm going to fill what i have first then decide on adding on.

Good buy! Don't worry about what some others say, once you fix that slide I'm sure you will love it. Not everyone has access to a bunch of reasonably priced truck branded boxes. Nothing wrong with having a nice shiny new box. Enjoy it.

btw...the black boxes probably won't look that bad next to or on top of the orange, I'd go for it.

You could always get a different colored box and repaint it to match you bottom box. Then you can show off your skills here on the forum.

I have several drawers with more weight than that in them.

That being said, I definitely think that box is worth $210.

damn romey sweet deal getting both. mine doesn't have the top board to it but i thought about getting a butcher block top from ikea to put up there or some cabinet grade plywood. i'll be calling waterloo tomorrow to get the slide replaced. i also saw that there's slots for extra slides to be added to the larger drawers. depending on what i put in there i may order some extras.

I would have bought it. Hell, I would watch that outlet store for additional boxes at that price. I wouldn't get too stressed out trying to match the color with a top chest, end box, or side locker. Function is more important than appearance. Congratulations on your new box.

they'd probably get me on shipping store to store. i'd only jump on it locally so i could haggle with them about buying it.

so did you pick up the green box already?
