Yaskawa VFD Question

I'm horse trading and a fellow is trying to throw a VFD in. Does anyone know if a CIMR-VU2A0012FAA by Yaskawa will take Single Phase input like some of the 3PH Hitachi's will?

(The deal is about a skid steer)

when you use a VFD as a 3 phase generator, you may have to de-rate the horsepower by 1/3, depending on the loading.

Good move.

Unless you have 3 phase, that VFD would be useless to you. While it puts out single or three phase, it is three phase input.

I was wondering that from what I have been reading. The V1000 FAMILY has models that input only 1PH, but that one, because of the '2' in the 3rd position of the model seems to say 200volt, 3PH.

Now, I have heard that some of the Hitachi drives want 3PH but will take only 2 legs (down rated, of course).

VFD's output is ONLY 3 phase & can only be used with 3Ø motors, 3 HP & smaller drives can be bought w/ single phase input & do not require derating, ones that can take either 1Ø or 3Ø inputs will require derating & it will be closer to 50% so would have to use a drive double the HP of the motor, which can get sticky because you have to size the wiring to 125% of the max input of the drive.

While I have not gone to the manufacturers website, the 2 should be for a 230V rated drive, usable on 208-240V, the 460V models are for 380-480V.

I am currently using a Yaskawa VFD (3 phase input) with 220 single phase input to power my 3 phase Bridgeport mill. It is done all the time. Visit the "practical machinist" web site, they have a good section on vfd drives.

You connect youe (2) 220v single phase wires to L1 and L2 and do not connect anything to L3. Connect your ground to the chassis ground.

They do not output single phase - unless the are broke.

10-4 to that unit being a 208-240V.

And yes, I have a shop full of 3PH motors and only 1PH service (OK, maybe only 14 of them). So my main interest in any given VFD is phase conversion. My secondary interest is controlling speed - like on my 12" Baldor grinder - I slow it down with a remote pot+VFD to avoid joining the blue tool club.

I've only ever setup Telemecanique, Allen Bradley and Hitachi VFDs. The last one I installed was a Hitachi WJ200-022SF and I am done with the other mfg, I "get" the Hitachi programming.

Last night my pop told me that Yaskawa used to be a bigger player in the US market at one time.

(100Amp Panel in the shop, 220V service, of course)

"Input Phase sequence insensitive"

I sure wish this would have worked (been able to drive of 1PH input), this old farmer said that he had "a whole case of them". I could have spread the extra around here to be put to good use.

I SO wanted this to be the case all along!

I was hoping that is what "Input Phase sequence insensitive" meant on the Yaskawa site.

Are you using a V1000 series or a different model of Yaskawa today?

"Input Phase Sequence Insensitive" means it does not matter which phase sequence it is, it can be ABC, or CBA on the input power to the drive, it will not affect rotation.


I have heard of using a 3Ø input drive w/ a RPC, would be one way to use them....

Sorry I misread the product page. The series specs mentioned single or three phase and it didn't dawn on me they meant the input.

Yes indeed READ the spec for the specific model not just the series. The specific model states three phase input.

Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. Operating it out of its design parameters is often not a really good idea.

Don't take this as a personal shot, as it isn't, but how often have we heard what a ************* something is, only to find out it was not being used as actually designed. Experimentation is always a good thing and a great learning experience, but since the OP was asking questions about a specific device, the design specs make a good starting point.

I've got plenty of motors around for RFCs, and I used to do that to drive my machines, but I like the frequency control of a VFD.

If laser3kw is correct, they may be able to gen up the 3rd leg...

worsedog, no offense take. Were all here to learn and exchange knowledge.

At the top of this thread, I posted the specs for CIMR-VU2A0012FAA also. The specs I found state single or three phase input. The specs you post states three phase and doesn't mention single. That is weird. But as always, due diligence on the part of the person using the equipment.
Of course if you have to run several machines, an RPC would work better. And you can use a 3phase VFD with RPC 3 phase input.

laser, I found the three phase data on the spec tab of the page you originally posted. The first tab that displays seems to be for the whole series of VFDs, then the spec tab was for the specific model we were discussing. :beer:

Thanks again to everyone. Update:

The skid steer deal fell through but I DID pick up a couple of the VFDs this weekend to play with (mfg 2013 per the cartons). I don't have time to put them on the bench and see what it what - but I have a vidmar drawer full of 1-3HP, 3ph Baldors to play with if need an RFC+VFD combo (seems terribly inefficient on power).

I'm still hunting for a good used Case 1845 steer. These things are hard to find - like used Subaru cars - everyone drives them into dust before selling.
