So that's what snow looks like. Two hours with your ATV. Not bad.

Last time I was here you weren't updating very often and now it took me over 1/2 an hour to catch up.

also took some time to pull the kids around on the sled,

I just put together this Sled pulling bar so that I can pull 3 sleds side by side If I want and for today. Just had the old single toboggan going.

the kids seemed to have a great time!

thanks for stopping by DLC,

yep it was a pretty bland looking I had mostly grass and gravel in the yard and now with 7" of heavy wet snow a whole new playground appears!

it was like the first snow falls of the year though as the ground wasn't/is'nt hard frozen so when the snow piled up in front the ATV and stopped me then I spun the tires and it dug down into the gravel fast. Made a big mess I'll have a few pot holes to fill in when the drive gets thawed out in the spring.

Re: Yea Old Garage

As a southerner who feels somewhat ridiculed for how often schools are called off here, I have to ask how much snow it takes for Wisconsin to call off work and school? I will grant that you said "ice" which is much worse than snow IMHO.

The worst snow we had that I can recall was in 1994 when we had about 18" of snow over an inch of ice. Temps had been below zero for 3 nights, then a perfect combination of warm humid air brought in rain before it cooled off enough to snow.

we Have had 5 snow day's this year I think,

1 or 2 back in December for temps below zero all day at -12 actual temp and/or wind chill of -35 they will call off school.

2 in January for a Ice storm that came through and made roads very slippery.]
1st was a Tuesday that was legit and then for my school where kids go and I work on Wednesday is early release for Kids at 2pm and Teacher's have professional development programs/work till 3:45pm so Wednesday's the option for a 2 hours delay isn't' feasible as you only have the for 4 hours if you have a delay and then the early release.

so the 2nd of the ice delays a 2 hour delay would have sufficed but with the early release day that day it got called a snow day.

For snow if we get over 8" will have a snow day.
a lot depends upon the time of the snow fall if you get 6" and its done snowing by 3am you'll get a 2 hour delay.

if you get more than 6" and it snows from 3am to 11am then you get a snow day as the plows are hard pressed to keep the back roads open where the school bus's need to get through to pick up the kids.

this year my road is plowed by 5:30am but in years past heck it was 2pm before the plow made its way down my back country road.

thanks for stopping by.

Re: Yea Old Garage

Thanks for the explanation as to why y'all close school. It is a pretty good joke that everyone goes for bread and milk when snow is called for. I guess people like milk sandwiches. We have only had one day with school out this year and nothing was happening at 6:30 and by 7:30, I decided I would stay in until lunch time. My wife is a teacher so we call it her summer vacation. Our kids are grown so I don't get to play with them in the snow anymore.

The school system consolidated about 50 years ago and was desegregated 40 years ago. I say all this to explain that the school system runs buses over 100K miles taking kids back and forth per DAY and I know they have some pretty rural roads to travel too so it is hard to fault them sometimes. The sad part is that the powers that be do not seem to remember from March to December how to clear the roads sometimes.

Re: Yea Old Garage

So the out side temp is in the 20 and I'm down to just the long sleeve shirt out working on the garage today!

Gotta love the wood stove in the corner!

I started out with 2 sweatshirts and insulated jeans but now after 4 hours with wood stove going its down right balmy up next to the ceiling!

Took 1 good hour to get up to nice temp but I've just kept the old wood stove cranking all day.

Any way more insulation install now working with smaller sheets.

Pic of a stage area ready for a sheet to go up!

So I cut the sheets just a bit oversize and have to force fit them and don't want to have a edge bust out on me so you look in the left over trim pile of tin and find a handy dandy fitting tool to get the seams to fit nice and tight!

Handy dandy edge matching tool in use!

Thanks for stopping buy!
I better get back to getting that last sheet trimester out!

1/2 the air conditioner is roughed and a ready for testing!

Though I'm waiting till my outside temp is above 85 before I try mine!

I have to wire up a 220 volt plug for it yet but I have the supplies for it someplace!

Okay I need to get back to work instead of surfin the garage journal!

But I find that if I post projects that have become cumbersome I due tend to keep working on said project so that I can post when it is finally done!
Any body else that way!

Re: Yea Old Garage

Sub: Have you noticed much air coming in around the AC unit since you are getting things buttoned up around it? I did some work for an elderly lady a few years ago who was a quilter and she had made a thick quilt style cover for her room AC units with elastic to fit around them for winter covers. I have kind of worked a shallow box out in my head using 2" foam board and skinned with 1/4" plywood to friction fit over the inside of the unit up to the wall/window should I ever get my proverbial stuff together and get insulation and AC in my garage.

Re: Yea Old Garage

Krcoomer I did caulk all around the AC unit and so far I haven't noticed much for a draft coming in around or through the unit.
I have been working in that corner of the garage as well and it was very breezy outside that day and I did a quick check for drafts around the unit.
seemed okay to me.

though If I get the wall finished off how I want I may build in a winter cover to go around the AC unit that way I can cut off any drafts that are coming in threw the unit it self.

I due have many areas around that need address Greatstuff/caulked to get a better air tight work area but for now I can be up to a nice working temp in 1 hour with the wood stove that I have set up and I have plenty of fire wood to burn.

Re: Yea Old Garage

back at the ceiling project and here's a Pic of the 2nd to last piece going up.

I was trying to force fit this into place and ended up snapping it in half so I had to cut another to fit into this spot.

also 2nd pic of the boxed out area for the attic stairs.

I'm thinking Ill add some Styrofoam to the bottom plywood of the stairs to help with heat loss as well. I know the price difference in the attic stairs was like $200 difference for insulated vs uninsulated.

as of now all the Styrofoam is all up and in place for the ceiling project I just have to finish out some on the trimming 1/4 boards that help hold the Styrofoam in place. maybe 1 or 2 more good work day's on this and I'll be done with this part of yea old garage

Re: Yea Old Garage

Sub: nice work finishing up your ceiling and pretty creative. for the extra insulation on your attic stairway i bet the styrofoam you are using might get trashed so here's a couple other options. in our area some of that hard foam insulation with foil backing is sometimes free or cheap if leftover from a project and you only need a piece or if it won't make the stairway too heavy maybe adding another 1/2 inch of plywood to the back of the stairs might help.

I bet it's nice heading out to the garage throwing a few logs in and starting a fire and while it's warming up maybe getting some time to chase your kids around the property? do you have a dog or any pets cause i don't recall seeing any?

cheers

Re: Yea Old Garage

during my on going garage insulation project I had to take a moment and stop and fix the old wooden ladder!

I got the ladder from my Father-In-Law who passed away a few years ago,

so ever time I use it I often think of all the good times I spent with him.

I have had to make a few repairs to it over the years to keep it safe and functional and many would say its time to just buy something better but I tend to like this old ladder and it has severed me well over the years.

Wife went a few years ago to one of those people who can interact with those who have passed on and she came back and said that the FIL likes to put his hand over things that I am looking for so that I can't find them when I am working on projects and so now when I have to spend 10 minutes looking for what I seemed to have misplaced I always think that the FIL is trying to help me out or just messing with me. Also mentioned my brown pants?
I mostly have blue jeans and 2 years ago got a pair of Insulated Fire Hose work pants from Dulth Trading company that are brown they are my go to cold weather working pants! I now have 2 pairs of those 2nd was a Garage sale score! they are pricey is why I only have 2.

Pics of the Ladder with the broken step and then the fixed step.
also the little work table the ladder is on is from the FIL Dairy barn it was the access door for when Loose bedding was blow into the barn.

Re: Yea Old Garage

Drives we have 1 dog a Teddy Bear is the brand of the dog.

doesn't get real big and is a real treat to have around the house alway's full on energy!

thinking on the ladder insulation I'll due 1' of pink/blue Poly and then 1"/1.5" of the white Styrofoam and use some 1/4 boards to hold them up to the plywood on the bottom of the ladder that is going to be a make it up with what I have and go project.
I may have some left over 1/4 plywood that I could use for the bottom if I think the Styrofoam wont hold up.

I need to greatstuff all around the attic ladder frame work but will have to wait till the temp is a bit warmer for that to cure out.

though temps are suppose to be in the 40s this weekend so I may just say heck with it and give it a try anyway.

Re: Yea Old Garage

So Saturday had temps in the 40's so there was no way I could burn super nice weather like that in February! "Funny 40 in November and I'm doing inside work all day"

so got the chains saws out and got to cutting up some firewood!

was going real good and then ran across this big hollow log and got to thinking with the Valentines day coming up I should get a gift for the wife and right now finances are tight and she doesn't like needless spending.

so I made some nice outdoorsy Flower pot holders.

I worked on these in the garage made a Base for each from some old plywood and add flower pots. She'll be in charge of the dirt and type of flowers but I'm hoping this gets me through V day with out to much fuss!

Re: Yea Old Garage

Sunday had High winds and was kinda cool to be outside so fired up the wood stove and got in a few hours working at the final trimming on the insulation project.

far back pic and then a up close pic where you can kinda look and the funky cuts I made to go around the long striping boards.

got the 1 section done just 2 more sections of trim to go.

I know this is kinda mudane but for me its another step in getting this garage how I want it to be.

Re: Yea Old Garage

and my last pics for the day was I organized my sawzall blades!

Metal on the Left, Tree Pruning/long Axe Blade middle, Wood on the right.

I had these all just sitting ontop of my board stack and would know 1 or 2 off and then have to pic them back up. Now there on nails right next to the entry door and not blocked off by a vehicle. and easy to get to when I need them.

I have more in my other workshop in the old sawzall box that I have but this will be nice when I need grap one quick and go from up at the garage.

thanks for posting and yes Big Block just have a sound that you don't get out any v6 or smaller.

this charger started out with a 383 and the dark green color. was redone in the late 90's to what it is now.

I have had the car since summer or 2000

as I have heard said,

there is no replacement for displacement!

thanks Krcoomer I have a ladder that I want to due something like that with.
it came with the old house and the rung's are pretty creaky and side are nothing special at all.

the FIL ladder is pretty stout for what it is. Works best when leaned up against wall vs free standing but also If I had a cement floor that was flat and smooth vs my gravel it would free stand pretty well also. I guess I'm in the habit after I place a ladder I give it a test shake just to make sure all the legs are settled onto the ground and don't shift on me when I'm half way up on it.

Re: Yea Old Garage

I understand about having the solid ladder base. My brother in law had a piece of an old extension ladder to get into his barn loft. It was in a position that it never needed to move. I "mounted" it with some 2X4's to the floor joist and a 2X4 across it so that it did not kick back off the joist. Also put some concrete blocks under it to keep it from sinking.

No worries on that one. Its ALL part of the process and helps tell the whole story. Plus, you will go back and read through this thread someday and those mundane parts are likely to bring back good memories of a job well done.

Re: Yea Old Garage

got some work done on Friday night was the only night I had this weekend to work on the garage.

Was busy with family stuff both Saturday and Sunday,

but now a ceiling Fan and Light installed!

Ceiling fan is used from the house has a slight squeak when running and when trying to sleep with it on very annoying so it got booted from the house 2 years ago and stored up in the garage attic till now when I finally got the wiring run and a spot in the ceiling for it!

got it wired up and for now both the light and fan on the same breaker. But when I get the inside's walls done I'll put them both on there own switch.
for my future reference Black is the light and Red wire is the Fan!

not much of a update but still good progress for me! Have my first Light installed and in its permanent spot! I also have 2 other florescent lights up but 1 is in a temp location and the other may stay where it is or get moved at some point.

SUB: LET THEIR BEE LIGHT!!! WELL DONE SIR!!

I also like how you use your thread to help you get the wiring done for later. post up pictures of how you wired it if you want to and maybe one of the electricians here might have a better idea for your wiring and switches.

if you go to DENWOOD'S thread he'll have you so you can turn on the lights in your garage when you are a mile down the road or turn it off from your phone if you forgot to.

Re: Yea Old Garage

Drives,

I just ran a 14-3 wire from the breaker box to the light/fan

the black is for the light and the red is for the Fan on the 14-3 line that I ran and the light is wired direct to the breaker box its nothing fancy and its On my to due list to move said breaker box.

and Denwood has been doing some amazing things I'm no where near that level of smartness at my place yet.

maybe some day I'll get that far but for now I'm happy having lights and Power in Yea Old garage and heat when I need it.

Im kinda Hoping for some more cold weather so that I can fire up the wood stove and have the fan going and find out if I get a more uniform heat going through the garage!

Ha. My thread is just one big reference note to myself. And maybe to others too... I was talking with my (new) family the other day and they asked how they would ever figure out all the "hidden" features I built into the Asylum if I wasn't around. And by "wasn't around", I'm SURE they were talking about me being on vacation or something. ;)

I told them, "Just read the GJ Asylum thread!" :)

Re: Yea Old Garage

got some more work done this last weekend.

Ceiling insulation project is being called done!
It all up and trimmed out, or enough that I'm Happy with it.
so the major winter goal has been accomplished!

though I may counter sink my screws at some time in some of the holding boards. It bother me a little when I look at them but not enough that I want to take the screw out and then drill a sunken hole and then put the screw back in so it sits flush with the board.

This weekend I got the Attic stairs insulated. though not a huge job it should still help with some heat loss.

pics of the ladder down and then with the ladder up and the insulation trims it out nice with the rest of the garage.

Re: Yea Old Garage

with the ladder insulation done,

It was time to get the car moved back over to its winter parking spot and since I had the car outside and running I snapped a quick pic.

didn't have the best lighting but I think the car looks kinda Cool out in the snow and the trees have a nice littler layer of Ice on them!

should have shut the trunk but oh well the trunk stores my extras' supply of Screws and stuff for working in the garage. other wise nothing gets set on the car. Well the radio gets placed on the roof and as the garage gets warmer the sweatshirts get put on the roof as well.

now the poor old 78 ford when in the garage gets what ever placed upon the hood, Box of screws, the drills or even extra boards, insulation what have you or the box of the truck is the holding area for the materials to be used be it the batts insulation or the Styrofoam bead board.
Most time the 78 gets booted outside while I work in the garage and the car stays inside and I just work around the car. I have tried to plan my winter work area around where the car has been parked. since it does take a little bit of coaxing to get the car running.
this time she stared up okay.

any way thanks for viewing.

Re: Yea Old Garage

last update for me for this weekend work.

the last trimming board I cut off had a bad split on it and needed to be glued together and then let the glue set for 30minutes and a total drying time of 24 hours,

so to speed things up glued the board together and then set it up on the wood stove bricks at a temp of 220 or so and then placed a hot brick on top and wait ten minutes and then it gets put up in place!'

speed drying for those who don't want to wait around for the glue to dry!

Re: Yea Old Garage

Snow is fleeting got maybe 2" on Friday night Saturday on top on the ice coating!
It's mostly all gone now temp was 40 today!

I didn't even bother to plow the drive way.
I have the plows off both atvs so I'm calling winter is done!

If it should return I can have the plow back on in 10 minutes, plus atv is stored in a heated and dry workshop.

Still have some ice on the ponds yet also.
But it's pretty thin that is for sure
