Nice JD 140's I have a JD 316 and 318 both are h2 but trying to set up an H3 for the 318 and then I might sell the 316. The 316 is a tilling tractor has rear pto powered 30 tiller with extension. The 318 does snow and lawn detail.

Garage make over is a looks great.

Sub: while I took some time away from GJ to maybe use the time to clear off some of my workbenches or more time ORGANIZING it was mostly spent in the kitchen eating all my wife's goodies she makes for the holidays.

that said I seem to get more done by posting a little and reading a bit on GJ then getting my day going on a positive note.

I hope you can post more cause your humor and positive posts are always welcome and wanted to wish you and your family a great 2020.

BTW your garage has come a long way since you started so even if you work on other things this coming year you've done well to get it to this point.

have been busy working on the 140's and also putting a snow plow on a ATV for the kid to use this winter.

ATV is a 2000 Honda Recon 250 2WD I thought he did Okay with the plowing for the first time.

If they are talking it just turns into a argument with in 3 words it seems like most times.

SUB: your son looks (and sounds) like a character (sorta like his dad?). his little sister doesn't have the stuff he wants or needs yet so he doesn't appreciate her, but wait til she starts bringing her cute friends over as he starts to notice the world of WOMEN and THEN.

just saying being a parent isn't always easy (or maybe never is), but it's a fun ride that you just can't get off of.

congrats on your PACKERS WIN and I watched the game. I would like to see a lot less of the personal dancing and stuff, but they played a good game in the cold.

don't worry xtremek, the ATV's are Honda and for the 02 Foreman out of 17 years of plowing snow its only not started 1 time and that was cause I flooded it out, waited 40 min and I was able to get it going.

the backup only has to shovel out snow on the doorway threshold 20 seconds of work. give or take.

so have the Pine wood derby event coming up this weekend so spent the weekend making final adjustments to the cars,

kid did the paint work and sanding on his and the sanding on mine. we both did the axle polish stuff.

new adventure this spring,
The daughter wanted to try making maple syrup,
so for she got 10 taps and away we go with trying to make maple sap.

First thing is finding maple trees, Not easy to due in winter with no leaves but My dad knew of some back behind his shed so got 9 trees tapped. She lost a tap somehow, "kids have to open things before you need to and dump them all out to look at the stuff"

have 7 trees tapped and getting 3-4 gallons of sap a day. Have 2 taps on the good producing tree and have 2 tree's not producing at all need to move tap's I guess

next up is the boiling the sap down its a 40 to 1 ration to make the maple syrup from what I have been told by the wife.

so made a simple stove set up to hold the pans to boil the sap.
got a pic from the internet of how to make a cement block stove and away I go.

Had to borrow top of the chimney from my garage heater but this is a make this with what you have project.



I placed a small fan in the stove opening and it worked great for pushing the smoke to the back and up the stove pipe and it forced air feed the fire as well.

and then get a fire going and place the pans and its a boiling it down we go,

had a temp gauge in the back pan and had beeper set to 217 not suppose to go over 220 so when it beep I'd had more sap to bring temp down and then not feed the fire so fast. Used small wood and some Pine branch's which burn fast and hot so it was a mind the fire type of day.

Brother-in-law wanted to help out and made this small setup out of a barrel he had, I would hold 3 gallons of sap to boil down where mine held 5 and I could boil down faster than him but when we got down to the final 2 gallons his stove setup worked great.

we put first pan on at 7:30am and pulled it off at 3:30pm and did 18 gallons of sap.

for a first run the syrup tasted pretty good from the finger swipped I got off the bottom of the strainer.

that's all I got for now.

will be doing more sap again this weekend.

So cool. And the pics in the last post didn't load. Great memories of helping my uncle with his maples. Kind of like picking berries, drink 6oz. straight from the tree, dump the bucket. 6oz from the next tree, dump the bucket. lather, rinse, repeat.

Thanks Drives it was a lot of work but when you get the first taste from the bottom of the strainer it seems all worth it.

the Daugher was super excited and could hardly sleep on Saturday night know we was gonna due the cooking on Sunday.

Have 7 gallons so far in the fridge to cook down again this weekend.

(Cool/fun project. I'm smack in the middle of maple syrup country and still not ambitious enough to try it!)

This last weekend was done with syrup by noon. Only had 10 gallons to process, was a slower week with sap production. Plus being better at the bowling off part.

I was at boyscout weekend planning session 11 boys and 3 adults on a 200 acre Boy Scout camp.

Today got 4 gallons and we moved taps from 3 non producing trees to doubling up on the 3 that was producing so might have a production increase his week.

Any body who,wants to show up and help boil down sap I'll let em lick the cheese cloth strainer as that's a one time use and then throw it away.

I'll have more picks this upcoming weekend when we boil down sap again.
