Picked up this vise knowing it had some sort of thread issue. Well it looks like someone torched a hole in the back slide for some reason and bunged up the threads behind the nut. Well only way to do anything is to get it open. Forced it all the way and you can see the results. Thinking about cutting the threaded portion of the spindle off and welding a steel acme rod to the smooth section. And making a new spindle nut with a coupler nut and some mild steel to form the rest. Is the spindle shaft steel or cast? Am I even going to be able to weld it together? Or make a new meatball of some sort and weld the steel acme to that. Wont look original but it will at least be useable.PXL_20221027_001125945.jpgPXL_20221027_001130676.jpgPXL_20221027_001139212.jpgPXL_20221027_001214439.jpg

I would get a whole new length of acme off Mcmaster. Generally the rods were steel, and nuts were cast.

It's doable but takes some effort. I used some Kindorf strut to hold my broken spindle and the replacement acme threaded rod straight while welding. Short welds grinding after each pass. Rotate often pulling it straight with each pass. You can grind deeper and weld hotter to fine tune the weldment pulling it into alignment. I cleaned the weld up on a lathe when finished but it could have been done with a grinder. It came out straight and will not fail without severe abuse.

For the nut use a short piece of the acme rod to hold the nuts in alignment for welding. They will likely be very tight on the threads after welding. I made a tap from a bit of the threaded rod by grinding a recess on one end. After multiple in and outs with the home made tap driven from a cordless drill the threads got buttery smooth. Pics may get reversed but start with the spindle weld. Ed.
