Just An Old Garage

This is just about as neat of a post as you are gonna find here on The Garage Journal. I got an email from one our new members and rather than restate it with glowing words, I figured I would just cut and paste the contents:

Hi, My name is Wayne Chapman. I own an original Imperial Oil garage/gas station that was started in 1946. It has been my place of employment for the last 20 years, and it looks just as retired as I do. It looks like a late 1930’s gas station that was abandoned in the 1950’s. Thought you might enjoy some pics. Wayne.









Editor’s Note: As Wayne is retiring, this historical joint is up for grabs. With any luck, Wayne will reply with details…

In any case, thanks to Wayne for the great pictures of a wonderful old building.

Looks like it's someplace in Ontario, judging by the Imperial Oil, sign, The OML (ontario motor League) and the "no Smoking" decal on the window.

Better get the "Sportsman Cigarettes" sign down before the tobacco cops nab you!

Love the patina on everything. And having the old pumps still staged properly. Awesome! And to think this is still a functional garage. Hope the next caretaker protects it as much as Ryan has. Thanks Ryan for posting!

Something along the lines of "You cannot advertise cigs in any way" Stores even had to cover up the cigs so they were not visible to "kids"

Glad I quit years ago, smoking up here would have just pissed me off.


BTW thats a great looking shop, pretty smart sales tactic as well :D

1967 Impala,

My grandfather ran the White Rose service station in Westlock, Alberta back in the early 1960's. I can remember visiting and having many milkshakes there (my grandmother ran the restaurant).

I have been able to obtain some White Rose decals that may make it onto the doors of my '59 Chev pickup once it's finished.

A Chev dealership here in Leduc has a restored White Rose gas pump in the showroom. I'll have to get some pics of it one of these days.

Mine was Orange Crush using a red licorice as a straw, and swinging on the gas pump hose(mom was never happy about that.... really dirty!)

Hey there, this is Wayne himself. What a neat thing you have going on here. I just wanted to say that I was not thinking of selling my old garage yet, but everything is for sale for the right price. Also, about the old White Rose station down the road on the corner, I still have the original White Rose glass globe from the old 1939 Bennett gas pump that old George White pumped gas with. Anyway thanks for all the comments on my garage. Wayne.

Adam, the tower was used for an FM antenna for a few years. The lead-in cable got ripped apart in a wind storm about eight years ago, and I never did fix it. There isn't much on FM that I like anymore anyway. Hey, this place still has two rotary dial phones in operation. I'm back to listening to an oldies station on a 66 Chev truck AM radio that I stuck up on the bench with a 12 volt battery, the first day I was moving in. It's still there, and I still use it every day. It's a good way to keep the batteries around the shop in use and charged. Thanks for the interest, Wayne.

The garage was built in 1963 by a fella by the name of Jack McLennan.Who had rented the shop that was built across the road since 1947. That garage is long gone .
I Knew that garage as soon as I saw the picture, I havent been by in 7 or 8 years but it looks exactlly the same.

I sent a link of this thread to my folks and my mom recognised straight away too.

My mom is from Oakdale and her dad was George White.
