Moriarity’s Lawn Mower

Mark Moriarity is a bit of a legend in some circles. He’s probably the world’s most renowned restorer off all things crazy and wacky from the late 1950’s up through the 1960’s. He’s restored and owned many original Ed Roth cars, the Car Craft Dream Rod, the Futurian, and others. Put shortly, the man knows his ****.

In any case, Mark recently stumbled upon a crazy old lawn mower. He didn’t have any serious projects in the shop, so he figured he would clean it up a bit. Boy did he… Check it out:

I realize this isn’t exactly on topic, but figured you fellas would enjoy it.

HOLY COW!!!!! :shocking: :shocking:

You gotta admit...this guy is GOOD!  And talk about wild project choices! :wtf:

Lots of folks will think he is crazy. But maybe this is what they REALLY mean when they talk about "thinking outside the box", and being a true "indivdual" who does not follow a crowd...or make clones of the same projects everyone else has.

Wow...just wow.

I remember the little oil/gas two-stroke was a great trimmer. When these were big and very inexpensive my family used an old electric motor model 18" cutter mower that was tough too keep from cutting the power cord and have sparks flying. I also remember using one like this and having to walk in the smoke path that the two cycle made.

That is just wicked cool!!!

I remember those. You had to wrap the rope around the tope and then yank the cord. They didn't have torque for ****. Worked on low grass but anything more than 4 inches high it was about useless. I never remember them looking that good

I love stuff like this.

There's a guy that goes around to the boat shows and he restores old outboard motors with this kind of enthusiasm. Made me want to buy the last one I saw in a junk store.

I want to mow with it! Is it odd that after I get done with a project like that all I wanna do is use it. Finish the car and take it out into the street and do a big smokey burn out, If only the once. I want to see it do its thing.

Moriarity always has something cool in the works, if people haven't seen his other toys they should go to the HAMB and look up his photo album. The Dream Rod car was supposed to be at the Car Craft Nationals in St. Paul this weekend; unfortunately it was either gone before I got there, or I just didn't find it.

As far as I know he's still trying to figure that out. There were no brand names on the mower when he bought it, and no one else seems to know either.

I want one, but I want a blower and some spinners on the wheels. Some whitewall tires would also be a plus. And maybe some flames.

Does anyone have a link to this guy's website or any links to other projects?

Too cool! I swear, from all the ideas I get bouncing around inside my brain as a direct result of the forums it's no wonder I have a headache all the time .

That is the most beautiful lawn mower I have ever seen! I can't believe that I just said "beautiful" and "lawn mower" in the same sentence, but it's true.

I just picked up this old Craftsman mower. Not as 'spacey" as the one here but still cool. Blade is missing but the Power Products engine still turns over.

Amazing work!. Stunning finish! I’d like to know of the underside paint, whether it is for “looks” or does it actually shed the clippings more easily? I have two vintage mowers, inherited, from the 70s; Sensation and a Bobcat (copy cat of Sensation). I’d love to put them back in use. The new stuff is so “plastic”. Sure wish I’d have kept the Jacobson and LawnBoy 2 strokers.

Pretty easy to stick some motorcycle-style rounded fenders made of maybe 3 or 4" tubing, w/a bit of shaping. Kick-up the trailing edge of each fender so it flares a bit, like a spread-lip. Put a bit of an angled lip on the front, maybe 45 degrees or 60 degrees. You could add an arched thin structural member crosswise between the two opposite-side fenders, with increasing/decreasing lightening holes in the crosswise structural member.
