That was very cool to watch. The solutions, the craftsmanship, the videopresentation, all top notch. Thanks for sharing.

Makes you understand how people could throw all their stuff into a covered wagon, go 1,000 miles from nowhere, and build towns.

There was a program on PBS about 20 years ago about a carpenter who only used hand tools. He used a foot powered lathe. "The Woodwright's Shop"

That show is still on the air. He does a few new episodes each year. Still wearing the same shirt and suspenders. :)
Better yet, whole episodes are available on PBS's website.

At first i though you were posting this
but this was very cool as well. I really like the idea of doing as much as you can by hand.

Great post!!! One of my favorite yet. I grew up watching the "woodright shop" as a kid with my grandapa and dad commenting at the same time on what he was doing. They are both great craftsmen and I learned a lot from them. Although they used more power tools, they had an ample supply of hand tools that they used frequently. I used some of the things I learned when building my barn door by hand. It was a lot of work and thought before I made any cuts to make it all go together like a puzzle. Lots of fun though!!! I always remember laughing when the woodright shop host would cut himself on his freshly sharpened chisels or burn his finger grabbing a just used bit.

Some people are just wired different and have the ability focus and patience to finish. Too bad he is wearing a ND shirt.

Reminds me of Henry David Thoreau's philosophy. If you want to go from LA to NY start walking. You'll get there before you can find a job to earn the money to take the train (in his time was the preferred mode of travel) being you had to provide shelter, food etc. while you worked to save for the expense of the trip.

and that's a slick not a chisel. It's one big slick though.

Very impressive! I had a few chuckles when he was tapping in the Dowels and Pins. Video was very well put together. Dude is a Master Craftsman for sure.

I used to watch all of the Woodwright's Workshop with Pops. Great show.
