3M White Board & Chaulk Board Tape

So 3M sent me two rolls of tape a couple of weeks ago – a roll of Dry Erase Tape and a roll of Chalk Board Tape. The function of each is just what you would think it to be. The Dry Erase tape is writeable with dry erase markers and the Chalk Board tape is writeable with chalk.  Otherwise, I found each roll to be identical in both holding power and strength. This isn’t duct tape for sure, but that is probably a good thing as this is really just fancy label tape – you don’t want it to destroy whatever you stick it too, right?

Anyway, this is pretty damned cool idea. The only thing is, I haven’t found a use for either roll yet. Maybe you guys can. It’s cheap enough. Give it a shot:

That is pretty neat.. I can see the Dry erase tape being really useful for labeling stuff...

I could see these being really handy for putting on tool box drawer fronts or fastener storage. The reason I haven't committed to labeling mine is because I move stuff around occasionally. This is the perfect solution!

Looks like an innovative idea.

But probably NOT for kids.

Ryan, I'll be interested to learn how sensitive either tape is to scuffing. Having spent decades in the corporate world and in front of my fair share of whiteboards (and the son of a schoolteacher who used to take his boys into the classroom during evenings when papers needed grading) writing both of those surfaces are easily obliterated by a casual brush.

These look like they could be for temporary marking. I'd be reluctant to mark things in storage 'cause the writing would not survive much use and handling.

I use a P-Touch or Dymo labeler for most things, and the labels peel off and get reused when a label needs to move. For short term I use a Sharpie on "Time Tape" from my lab. I'm not sure where I'd be able to use these tapes...

Ryan, can I use caulk on the chalk board tape?

How I do it, posts #39 to 41:http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=3258865&highlight=magnetic#post3258865

Hell if I know... Out of curiosity, why would you want to use caulk over it?

It's a little more resistant than a typical dry erase board.... maybe...

I have ordered a roll of the dry erase on Amazon for $5.97 a roll and prime delivery.
I'll use it on the Sterilite type storage bins I have my tooling in. As the tooling changes I'll change the label.

Thanks for the tip.

just write directly on the plastic box with your dry erase marker.

If it doesn't wipe off, a squirt of wd-40 or hand sanitizer will remove it

Cool Stuff.. A person could always use wet erase markers so the writing doesn't wipe off so easy?

Here's a related trick that might be relevant here (though I have no experience with the dry erase tape).

Whenever I want to put something semi-permanent on a whiteboard, I use a sharpie. It stays there until you draw over it with a dry erase marker, at which point you can erase it easily.

I'm guessing that this will probably work for this tape as well.

I have lots of white vinyl I use with a sign making vinyl cutter, so using dry erase markers on such is commonplace. It also works for laminated items as well.

I could see using this tape on the front of storage cabinets above the work bench to indicate what is inside them if you tend to reorganize a lot. I don't, but it could be used there.

It looks more like a neat idea trying to find a problem.

I'm not imaginative enough to have a purpose for these.

The idea though is definitely great for those that don't like constructing their own stuff or too cheap to buy finished products. I guess you could tight lay strips and make a complete functional board out of these if there's enough. :dunno:

Just ordered a roll of the dry erase, it will be perfect for my reloading bench.

Currently I use a shoebox sized bin with tape and sharpie to mark what stages are done with that group of casings. This tape should work a little better

I showed my wife these new tapes. She is attending college and involved with aarp and other 'public' events. She got all gitty about these two new tapes.

I can also see the use of the tapes as to mark bins, containers or what ever the container when the items changes often in like size, quality, finish.

Permanent re-writable signage label.

Re: 3M White Board & Chaulk Board Tape

the problem I see is, neither chalk nor dry erase tends to be "smudge" resistant enough for anything i'd have around. most things I label get moved frequently enough that they'd likely get too smuged to read and defeat the purpose of the label.

You can easily label your kidnap victims in the back of the van so you don't forget which is which!

I can see it being useful for marking temporary storage as long as you're not going to handle it much. Would be handy to have on the storage boxes we use for food at Scout camp as they aren't see through. Could mark up the contents each camp so you know whats where. It only needs to last a few days. Would save time hunting through boxes in the store tent.

I would say the chaulkboard tape should be less eraseable by just rubbing against it, with that being said i would use it in something like a woodshop or metalshop on semi finished items. You know the things that need to be trimmed a couple RCH here and there to fit correctly.
