Estate Sale Drill Press

I woke up this morning before the sun came up, hopped in my heaterless ’64 F100, and drove an hour away in freezing (for Texas anyway) temps to an estate sale.  I got to the sale early thinking I had to beat the rush to get what I wanted. I arrived at 8am to locked gates. For the next two hours, I froze my *** off while listening to This American Life on my phone. By 9:45am, however, other people started to arrive. And instead of waiting patiently like I was, they jumped the fence and wondered right on in.

Now, I’ve never been to an estate sale before. I didn’t know if this was kosher or not… and since we are in Texas and people shoot people in Texas for trespassing as well as lesser offenses, I decided to call the folks responsible for the sale  and confirm the sale’s open time of 10am. A fired-up woman answered the phone and I told her my predicament. “All I want is that drill press,” I said.

She answered back by telling me she was stuck in traffic and running late. “Those people are trespassing,” she said. “Don’t you do it too.”

“Yes man,” I answered – assuming I was about to lose the press to some hardened and well experienced estate sale veteran. Fifteen minutes later, she arrived with wild eyes and a pissed temperament. “Ya’ll back away from the gate and let us through!” She screamed. Being that I was first inline, she seemed to be yelling at me. I complied, quickly. “Are you the guy that called?” She asked through my window as I backed my truck out.

“Yes mam,” I replied.

“Your drill press is in the garage,” She said. “Out of principal, it’s yours.”

I couldn’t believe my luck. She literally gave me the drill press! As I was loading it up, I overheard her talking to another picker (that’s what we call them now, right?). She was explaining the circumstances of the sale and mentioned that the widow was hosting the sale and that her husband had passed a few weeks back. With that news, I lost my deal of the century and handed over $50. “Out of principal,” I said.

Anyway… Check out my new Craftsman 103.23140!

Drill press is nice but the story is outstanding. Not only would I have given you the drill press, I would have shut the sale down for 15 minutes and let you look around by yourself just to piss off the estate sale vultures. I've seen it myself, these estate sale wackos get way too aggressive over everyday items they hope to flip for an easy $50. They peek in windows, climb around/over fences, **** their way in to get into the front of the line, etc. I place too much value on my dignity to stoop that low.......

Good job Sir !

You defended the homestead, AND stepped up and paid for the DP while still getting a great deal. For doing the right thing, you earn a . Even if the slow speed pulley hadn't been on it, that price would have earned a View media item 48651.

Really, it is a good feeling to do the right thing.

Don't know much about those. Is it basically on a tensioner pulley so that you can change the belt to the other locations on that slow speed pulley?

The middle pulley is on a pivot, so that tightening the motor tightens both belts at once. Typically, if it has the correct matching pulleys, once the tension is set, you can flip the belts from one groove to another without loosening or readjusting the belts. Just push the belt towards the smaller pulley and turn it by hand.

Ryan you are a Texas gentleman!

But you still ****!

I don't even see any "arc of shame" on that table.

Now you have to make it look as nice as your Craftsman bandsaw!

PS it was below freezing here in Louisiana too!

The press and the truck make a great picture together.

The multi-speed pulley alone is worth what you paid, possibly more. Nice score and a great story. You've earned a

Nice machine!

According to the various Sears manufacturers codes, the press was built by either Sarlo Power Mower Inc., or Roper.

I this day and age good manners and fair play are often lost. She displayed fair play and you displayed good manners. Good on both of you! What goes around comes around.

The plaque on the front says "King-Seeley Corporation." Maybe one of them is a parent company ? :dunno:

That $50 didn't make you lose the deal of the century...

And it helped make it the story of the century.

You aren't the only guy traipsing around the country in a cold vehicle.

I spent 7 hours in an unheated van in Detroit to get my Bridgeport.

Excellent story and nice press. That $50 went to a widow maybe in need of burial expenses and so on. My father in law passed away past December and we found out how expensive a funeral could be. Yes I go to estate sales all the time and people do lose their sanity over old **** thinking its a treasure. I watch them acting like a bunch of hungry wolves fighting over a dead animal. They over look many nice items while I take my time and pick up what they miss being in a rush score big. F..king idiots.

Cool story and a nifty vintage drill press to boot.

Not sure what the weather was there today as my niece didn't mention it but having lived in Central Texas for 8 years back in the 70's 35 Degrees in Central Texas = 10 degrees in Minnesota or Washington State.
